Greninja's shilling is disgusting too, but it doesn't make Roar's any better, but Delphox and Chestnaught's popularity paled in comparison, whereas Roar's case wasn't that easy, all 3 were moderately popular on their own right

Intimidate may be common, but Pokemon that can actually use it well are few, roar's stats pair up really well with it. Primarina and owl got shafted, ability wise, and with Masuda still having a lot of pull in the games, ir's no surprise
I'm okay with Sakurai adding Roar 'cus he liked him, and his gameplay is fun and brings great stuff to the table but from a character standpoint he was not the best choice (I postulated in my first post, ignoring gameplay, character only)
Smash is both: Character AND Gameplay, that's why Piranha and Roar are great additions to the game, they slack a bit in character but they make up for it in gameplay
Compare, to say, Dante, who at this point wouldn't really bring anything to the table character OR gameplay wuse (Bayonetta and a lot of the sword users make him redundant, especially with Hero having 20+ specials) roar's a good choice overall, but still one of the ''cringier" choices, as OP put it
