Nightmare is what you're thinking. It was a joke difficulty added in post-launch of the original game after Ultra-Violence, the intended "very hard" mode, was conquered and fans complained it was too easy. Nowadays modern source ports and especially WASD + mouse aim trivialize some aspects of Doom to the point that UV on the original games is the go-to.

Boy did Romero overcompensate to prove that UV should be the hardest in SIGIL.

Medium correlates with Normal in games difficulty. UV is only standard because the community enforced it to be after 25 years of playing these things thoroughly. There's a reason why the difficulty selection defaults to Hurt Me Plenty, Ultra-Violence is the challenge for real pros. SIGIL reintroduced this by pretty much trying to fuck you up the ass the instant you start on UV.

Zandronum is multiplayer-focused. Doomsday is kind of a mess of shit. ZDoom is dead, supplanted by GZDoom which is basically the modern source port standard even despite Graf's questionable handling.

It does, but you're just playing a stripped-down GZDoom if you go that route, as the only thing Zandronum offers is a proper inherent menu selection for player classes if mods have them. With a number of mods moving to zscript now, that means they simply don't work on Zandronum anymore.

It's great for vanilla style gameplay and visuals but in turn doesn't have a lot of options and doesn't exactly "take advantage of modern hardware".
I prefer it for the original Doom and older wads.
A lot of modern mods and mappacks will require Boom-compatibility or ZDoom to play though which makes GZDoom a good choice for those since it's compatible with almost everything.
Also the newest CrispyDoom release (5.6) seems to be pretty bugged at least on my machine so you might want to get the 5.5.2 version.

Yes, it's UV but enemies respawn after 20 seconds I think, so you really gotta keep your ass moving or else you'll be overwhelmed and run out of ammo. But ammo pickups are doubled, like in ITYTD. Just ammo found on the level, not ammo from zombies.

Nobody with a brain is going to try to argue that og Doom has better combat than NuDoom. The problem with NuDoom is the level design is fucking horrendous and the game gets super monotonous towards the latter half because the game is basically just hallway -> arena -> hallway -> arena ->hallway -> arena. If the entire game had levels designed like Foundry it would be a fantastic game, but levels stop being like that when you get to hell which is around level 6.

If you use mouselook you can chaingun snipe the chaingunners and it becomes actually a great wad to play through. Abusing the game's inability to aim up or down for you after an actually kinda short distance isn't fun difficulty.

None, in doom only enemy spawns are affected by difficulty. Only the easiest difficulty and Nightmare have other special traits.

why doesn't GZDoom allow you to select pistol start on each level? especially when you die you don't have the choice to restart the level with only the pistol, the way the game is intended to be played. You literally have to cheat to do so.

I don't know if it was because of the source port or something, but that particular map was buggy as hell back when I played it. I would clip through the terrain and fall off the map or would not be able to fit between narrow passages and had to noclip my way through to progress.

#1 that's chocolate doom, an existing port which someone spent a lot of time making.
#2 that's not going to work on an unhacked switch.

Why are there so many of those Doom launchers? Is it like an engine that reads the contents of the wads and interprets them in its own way?

DOOM and DOOM II had their source code released a while back, so these engines basically use that source to play these games on modern systems and add features
Super Mario 64 recently got decompiled so expect the same thing for that

A part of id's old policy before they were bought by Bethesda was to make all their engines open source when they moved on to the next one. As such the source code was released and with Doom's inbuilt ease of customisation allowed for everyone and their dog to make their own fork if they wanted to.

Source ports may be what you're thinking of, and that's what happens when a game's source code is opened to the public, resulting in a lot of different interpretations of how to improve upon Doom code-wise and so forth. Doom Retro is a perfect example of a highly superfluous source port that just adds little neat things on a software-style Doom but kind of is unnecessary.

Launchers are just programs that help people sort their mods, maps and shit.

Chocolate Doom is GPL I think, that means they'd have to release/distribute any changes they make to the source code.

Their job is to sell Doom on the Switch, not "make it" for the Switch. You know ID still owns the license for the WADs, right? Those are the physical games. Imagine how much easier it would be to just take existing open source frameworks, port them to the Switch, and now you share your labor with the community who can then use their user generated content on your software, and then you can sell the official WADs on the store page seperately from the framework which would be free because open source?

Zenimax would rather never directly use anything from the fans, solely because it could probably cut into profits if they had to attribute a single thing to a fan sourceport. So coding an entire backend shell in Unity, embedding the wad files into it and then running a higher-res software Doom through that is somehow their choice of action.

It would be nice, but consoles are locked down walled gardens by design, I'm not sure exactly why you're expecting them to open up a game like that, to nearly limitless modding. That just doesn't fly on consoles, at most you get a level editor which is tightly controlled and they know exactly what it can and cannot do, with a system for them to also ban/remove levels they dislike (for whatever reason).

I'm not sure exactly what needs to be done to a program in order for it to run on a non-jailbroken console and I'm not sure how that interacts with the GPL either, so I don't know if tying their shit together with a GPL codebase would bind them to release their own shit or not, but that might be a consideration. They'll happily mooch off of BSD-licensed free software because they don't have to give anything back.

I mean Bethesda themselves opened the floodgates on Xbox One with modding for Skyrim Special Edition. Big problem was that the real meat of modding, the script extender stuff, was impossible. But it was still a big bulk of content since you could add a lot of new things without needing SKSE. Playstation got fucked, but only because Sony enforced a super tight wall that wouldn't allow for any custom asset injection.

Doom is arguably one of the easiest games to mod for, I broke a wad with MS Paint assets when I was twelve. Wads and the base Decorate can already be pretty extensive for modding, and there's a metric ton of vanilla-compatible mapsets out there that could extend the playtime of console ports by dozens of hours each. But it's too much effort and too 'unsafe' probably.

the point isnt to mod stuff in, the point is to maximize the resources that have already been put into the game over time and then "reheating" that. The problem we have is that we have an open-source engine that we want to put on a proprietary store front with a GPL license. You have to get around that somehow.
