It runs great on the switch and it's the only version that has infinite lives added in on the easiest difficulty (useful if you want to co-op with a friend and they're casual and can't keep up).
This was a much needed feature due to the reasons i just stated but it's yet to be patched (if it ever will) into any other version.

Dude the game is SIGNIFICANTLY different from it's SNES and arcade counterparts while keeping the core gameplay intact. The first boss is xbox huge compared to its SNES version in relation to the characters. In the SNES version the OG Ninja is the same size as the boss on the left, in the Once Again version that boss on the right is the same size as Raiden and is twice the size of the OG Ninja.

FUN FACT: The original Ninja Warriors in the arcade played on 3 monitors using reflected mirrors to give the illusion of a super wide game resolution and was one of the earliest games to do so! You may have seen such a technique employed in the 6 player x-men arcade beat em up. Also the original arcade game cabinet had a built in subwoofer for sounds!

Dont forget that they changed the look of certain stages. I hardly recognized Stage 2 in Once Again because the original SNES had it at a different time of day and was more focused on the machinery with your character, but now you get to see wider view.

Also, the stage that ends with you fighting Phobos and Deimos is now changed to have the red sky from the introduction cutscene as the background instead of just a night sky.

The core gameplay is more or less similar but you also have new attacks and enemies have new attacks too so there's new stuff to deal with. I highly doubt playing as Raiden or Kamaitachi will wield the exact same experience.

Returning characters got a new move, juggles after a throw or groundbounce are possible, and those robot enemies that have the plated armor take noticeably less work to get rid of. You can still cheese bosses out if you catch them by chance in a loop, and afaik that Martial Artist boss if significantly more difficult than he was in the original.

The only core mechanical changes I gathered is that you can use your Blaster (screen-clearing attack) in a knocked-down state, whereas before you had to wait until waking up after being knocked down before you could use it, so you can recover more quickly. With the transition from 4:3 to 16:9, there's now often more enemies on screen than average than in the SNES version, which had a hard limit of like four. So a lot of enemy patterns have been redesigned. One thing I have noticed is that ranged enemies tend to be used more often now, probably because the screen space is much wider.

Some enemies and bosses have been changed. Like the masked ninja guys can now throw kunais to harass you at range, and I think some enemies have less health to compensate for there being more enemies on screen on average than in the SNES version. The big monk guys seem noticeably more jumpier. There's also a new flying drone enemy which can shoot downwards diagonally, but it dies easily in one hit to make up for being hard to hit. Some stages also had you be bombarded by missiles, except the shadow which telegraphed where they'll land only gave you a second to react which often made it bullshit, so here in Once Again there's more time between the shadow appearing and missile landing.

In terms of bosses, ST1 has been completely redesigned to not be a total pushover where you do one or two jump in-combos before he dies. Now he's fucking hueg and super armors through your moves and cannot be thrown (unless you're playing as Raiden), so in that regard he does a better job at teaching you to block as he'll attack in the middle of most of your combos.

The ST3 boss is now accompanied by adds on Hard Mode, which was a necessary fix because without adds a beat 'em up boss is just a matter of exploiting its AI and repeating the same combo, but having to deal with additional enemies and their asynchronous attack patterns forces you to adapt. The ST3 boss was the only one which lacked any, so it's nice to see this change.

The ST4 boss hasn't changed much, but his cane now has a rocker thruster attached to it, which I felt was worth mentioning. The ST5 boss is now a lot more mobile and aggressive, and will *teleports behind you* a lot more frequently. Though now you can interrupt him when he's charging up his flame pillar attack. The ST6 boss duo is conceptually unchanged compared to the SNES version, except now you have to deal with two ST1 bosses with super armor who jump and slide around. Unlike the SNES version, on Hard Mode there's also rolling and flying drone adds. The ST7 boss can now make himself invincible to grabs much like the Puma enemies, and on top of that the adds are much more numerous on Hard Mode with frequently spawning grunts and flying drones on top of the existing Pumas and Androids.

The final boss has seen a lot of changes on the other hand. It used to be that you'd have laser screens regularly appearing everywhere but the center of the stage to force you to move around, but now laser screens can also appear in the center to make throwing enemies at Banglar even more difficult. When you get him down to around 50% a laser screen will start appearing in the center much more frequently than at the sides, and on top of that there's also two new laser turrets of which one can shoot the ground diagonally downwards while slowly moving towards you in order to force you to move or jump away on top of all the shit you're already dealing with, considering there's a lot more enemies spawning at once here than in the SNES version.

Hum...yeah but the issue is that this seems to be only the games themselves.

So basically, a lot of it is cool shit and a straight improvement. The only unfortunate part is that the flame breathing ninjas feel much more underutilized because the range on their flames is nowhere as threatening as it used to be now that you have all this space, and could have been extended a little more.

As for the new moves and characters:

Ninja has largely gone unchanged. I think his dash range has been a bit boosted to compensate for the extra screen space and his crouching jump attack has been replaced with a bodyslam for some reason. Doing a hover and a downwards spin also lets him launch enemies for a combo now. But otherwise the only new addition is his new Charge Move where he can swing his nunchuks on demand instead of on a combo finisher, which knocks away most enemies and can deal a fuckton of damage on the ST1 boss-type enemies, and for juggling enemies near walls.

These Charge Moves cost battery energy and unlike the old Charge Finishers (where you'd press up during a combo finisher to perform a more powerful finisher) your battery doesn't have to be full to use it, but unlike Charge Finishers they don't give you i-frames. Ninja will swing his nunchuks for a while during which he's vulnerable to being interrupted from projectiles or small/crouching enemies from behind.

I haven't gotten around to playing the game myself, but from what I saw the health bar and battery gauge is shared between players, so you gotta S T R A T E G I Z E, and one guy can't just carry the other. Dunno if there's settings which allows you to change this.

Kunoichi has seen more changes to make her more powerful. She now has a forwards spinning jumpslash called the Helm Breaker which allows her to move forwards while attacking mid-air, though it doesn't set her up as well for a grab/combo as her kunai thrust does. On the other hand it's useful within combos, since Kunoichi has some decent combo potential now thanks to her up-throw. Probably the best second to Yaksha.

Her Charge Move includes being able to throw three shuriken, which is useful for clearing out groups of fodder or controlling one side of the screen from a distance. I don't know how useful it is within combos. When used mid-air, the Charge Move instead has Kunoichi move backwards while throwing a diagonally downwards barrage of kunai like in Shinobi 3, which is decent for retreating or just harassing a group of enemies whereas shuriken you throw from the ground will all get absorbed by the front-most enemy if the impact doesn't kill him.

Kamaitachi is much more blender-like now. Much like Kunoichi he has a forward slashing move now, but unlike hers this one is a Charge Move of which multiple ones can be chained together to blend through entire groups of enemies, on top of being able to juggle airborne enemies. He also has a Charge Attack which lets fire quills from his back to hit airborne enemies, which combines especially well with his Tornado Throw which can toss multiple enemies at once in the air behind him. The expanded screen space also means that his large attack range and fast attacks aren't as powerful, which makes him considerably less braindead to play than like he did in the SNES version.

That sounds more funny than sexy honestly.

That only leaves the two new characters. Yaksha is a very technical character who relies on her juggles and combos for decent crowd control and damage output, because those massive honkers make her much move slower than every character short of Raiden, on top of her backflip not being as powerful as Kunoichi's and Kamaitachi's, so she can't really somersault over enemies either. Her base throws also have little range, so for throws she has to rely on her very powerful tentacle arm throw which has a fuckton of reach, but it's also a Charge Attack which requires energy. It can simultaneously also function as a more powerful somersault when her arms just grab the floor.

On the other hand, her slide is a very powerful approach move, and one of her grab combos will propel you and the bastard you're pummeling into the air, from which you can perform any combo you'd like. She has the best combo potential in the game and many of her moves can flow into others, which probably makes her one of the more deeper characters to learn. Since she's just been released, nobody can tell what that looks like for sure.

Raiden is a pretty unique character for beat 'em ups in general, since he's of such a good size and all. Basically he's got a fuckton of firepower and can effortlessly control a single side of the screen, but has difficulty controlling the situation when surrounded. Basically he can't turn around on a dime like every other character, he has a separate command just for turning around which isn't instant either.

His basic swing has a lot of range, but his only option to hit enemies from behind is to spin his torso, but it can't hit enemies if they're crouching behind him, and especially grunts like to crouch before stabbing. You can do your regular swings behind you when crouching, but this makes you unable to move and it takes time to revert from a crouching to standing state.

When hit you do get super armor, but it also slows down your attack speed and response time, so because you're so big and slow, enemies can easily get in a lot of damage when you let them get you, making positioning and CC important. He especially suffers when environmental hazards are involved, and is the worst match-up against the final boss because of it.

Raiden's only grab is a Charge Move, but it does let you grab two enemies at once on top of letting you throw them across the screen, hitting everything in their path. Since you can throw enemies in both directions, you can also use throws tactically to change your facing directions while attacking.

Most of your damage output comes from holding down the attack button to charge up an attack where you hit the ground and nearby enemies (during which you're left vulnerable), but more primarily it comes from transforming into Walker mode, where you can fire a chaingun which hits every enemy in front of you, or launch a burst of grenades in an arc to hit airborne enemies or stack them with your chaingun. Thing is that doing so costs battery. Even doing a backflip in Walker Mode will cost battery, so you have to commit to your position while in Walker Mode as it has no options at all to hit enemies from behind. Basically Raiden is highly reliant on his battery gauge to deal damage, and his super armor preventing you from being knocked down means you won't easily lose it like other characters. However, you can still get knocked down if enemies hit you while you're in the middle of performing an attack (I think).

Basically Raiden isn't a steamroll gimmick character and requires a lot of knowledge to use properly without getting steamrolled.

If I had to sum things up with the visual upgrades, the new music, and the co-op mode, Once Again looks like a straight improvement. It'll be a day 1 buy for me when it comes to PC.

Hold attack to block. Press jump + a direction while blocking to dodge, while dodging you block attacks coming from the front. Block + dodge to close distance, do your melee combo then evade behind him and try it again. If he starts blocking stop mashing and block yourself because he's about to swing on you. Kunoichi doesn't have any easy tricks for him you just have to wear him down. Throw out your sword finisher when your meter is full (attack 5 times (?) then up+attack at the same time) to do a little more damage, or just do a smart bomb it's probably about as good for her.

I mean you don't have to be a savant to 1cc this game, I've done it on normal and hard and I wouldn't ever call myself good at games. Just takes practice, getting very familiar with your character and learning how best to approach certain enemies with them.

That said, you have to 1cc the game to get on the leaderboards at all and on the switch only 57 people have 1cc'd normal, 8 hard, and 0 co-op. So I guess it does take a little effort.

Yes, you unlock the arcade soundtrack after clearing the game once (continues or not). Daddy Mulk plays in the first and last stages like you'd want. The arcade game didn't have boss music so they play all the way through the stage uninterrupted.

btw you unlock the SNES soundtrack after clearing the game a second time. I actually prefer the remade music though. It's actually the exact same guy who first composed it in 1994.

You need to beat the game with Yaksha or Raiden to unlock the SNES music. To be fair, though, that music just doesn't compare to the remade tracks.
