No, Japan has the APPEARANCE of mandatory English lessons. In reality, these lessons teach next to no actual English, and they're well renowned as some of the worst second language teaching in any country. You actually have more of a chance of picking up French, German or Spanish as an English native than you do of being a Nip who learns English, and the vast, vast majority of people in Japan who can speak English on even a basic level have spent a year or two abroad.

This is why they hire English "teachers" from other countries, and only expect them to hold a generic degree and know nothing about teaching. Because it's purely to make the school look good on paper, and the government regulations are actually set up to support this, because Japan doesn't actually want a large proportion of ESLs, they want people to be nationalistic and fearful of globalisation.

Honestly, the idea Hollywood is creatively bankrupt while the rest of the world isn't is such complete crap. These cultural differences make them initially seem original if you mostly only know Hollywood films but the more you consume any nation's films the more you see there isn't as much originality as you first thought. It's such a fucking joke, for example, every time I see someone claim Japan does horror better than America because they are so "creative". This statement typically comes from someone who have seen like three Jap horror films in their whole life.
