Developers like it because they can cut time and costs by not programming AI or adding any content outside of some maps and basic gameplay

I only buy single player games.
Other people rationalize buying multiplayer games only because you can pirate single player games, but I rationalize it in that all multiplayer games eventually die in which case you're left with a dead game.
Most games I see these days are exactly that. Everyone's talking about some new game and then I find out it's multiplayer-only. Every single time.

Who said anything about difficulty? it's all about cost and time and a functional netcode is both cheaper and more cost effective than decent AI, especially if your title is a MP only title as that netcode will continue to pump money from brainlets who use real world money for loot crates and similar shit, an AI won't.

I spent my teenage years playing CoD4 through to Black Ops and you know what, those games are shit. But back then they provided a dopamine rush and all the kids were talking about CoD at school. I loved that time in my life and look back on it with great fondness. It's a community thing, both irl and online. It's not about planned obsolescence anymore. That was true back in the CoD days but now it's all about 'games as a service'. If publishers had it their way people will still be playing fortnight in 20 years time and Epic won't have to spend time (and the risk of) developing a new game ever again.

Games as a service evolved with technology. Game devs still have to make new games to make sure they are keeping up with new trends but they are not looking to make a yearly franchise. They want a game with a 5 year lifespan.
