It'll sell some more copies of FIFA but its not going to be a second PS2, that kept selling for many reasons that don't really apply here, such as regional availability and pricing.

The PS3 basically stopped selling when the PS4 came out, it had one last big game with TLOU and that was it. I expect the same to happen to PS4, people will just move on and play FIFA 21 on the PS5, there's no reason to buy a PS4 when its not getting new games beyond some multiplats that are better on PS5.

TLOU2 will likely be a PS5 launch title, and I think you're overestimating how many people will actually buy Death Stranding. I don't think its going to be a huge 10+m seller and I don't think either game is going to move millions more PS4s, I think they've about hit their saturation point with console sales, they'll only go down year-over-year from now.

"New IP" means nothing when its just a coat of paint on the same framework we've been playing for the last decade. Most of their big exclusives have photo-realistic art direction and focus on presentation and story and are third-person action games and/or action-shooters. They're all extremely grounded in realism, even when they feature giant robot dinosaurs. I would definitely agree with this, and I know because I played a lot of those first party homogenized games. I never thought I'd have to say this about a video game of all things, but they are striving for too much realism. It's too much, we don't need that. these are supposed to be fantasy escapes, not simulators. And that's what each one feels like; a simulator instead of a game.

Your post has me thinking about if the US has any big IPs like Mario or Zelda that are really malleable. IPs that could spawn RPGs, platformers, shooters, etc and aren't fully restricted to one genre. To be frank I cant think of any except maybe Doom which has 2 RPG spin-offs and the recent VR game. But even then, I don't think we can expect constant Doom spin-offs like you can with Mario or Zelda.

You bring up a good point but not in the way you intended. I think the reason many western IPs aren't as malleable is because they're too complex. They focus so much on who the main character is and how/why they're doing things in that specific way. That's why Mario is so malleable because at it's core, Mario is just about saving the girl from the baddie. Its simple. Simplicity means an IP becomes open to so many more forms of interpretation. I think that's why doom seems like one of the more malleable western IPs because it's simple. Just kill demons. No extra bullshit required.

Thing is that Nintendo consoles always sell more in the first third of their lifes, while Sony console are much more consistent throughout and sometimes even sell more as time goes on.
Doesn't matter much if Switch is "on track" when it's only 2-ish years old, especially when it was such a clusterfuck of a release schedule, with Sony's next-gen coming out next year which will obviously have a huge impact on Switch's momentum.
Also remember that Nintendo generations are much more short-lived than Sony's. It wouldn't be surprising if Switch lasts 2 or 3 years less than PS4. It has no chance of catching up, especially with 9th gen next year.
