He was upside down so the shock would've killed him. The real kicker is they did almost get him out with a winch, but it snapped as he was being lifted out and he fell even farther into the hole. So for a few seconds he experienced immense relief as he was pulled out only for the line to snap and his body to go even deeper in. There was probably a point in his mind of immense relief and then it shattered. Then he fucking died in that hole.
