Read what your GF abilities do.
Drawing endless amounts of magic from enemies is the equivalent of grinding for levels in other FF games.
Don't depend on GFs to carry you, or you will hit an impassible wall later on.
Don't take anything Squall thinks to himself at face value. Look into underlying meanings.
Besides that, any specific tips will most likely ruin your experience. There is an optimal way to play FFVIII that will break the game, and finding it for yourself is rewarding, but having someone tell you that is basically the same as reading a walkthrough for a puzzle game.

And by this I mean, if you aren't the kind of person to grind 10 levels in every new zone you come to, don't spend 30 minutes grinding out every new spell you encounter.
