The other half is actually quite a reasonable point, that the gaming community at large are the worst critics because they say that IGN and others are hacks that just give everything an 8 or above (which he agrees with) but then gamers get mad whenever a professional critic decides to give a game a review lower than 8 (which he pulls up Days Gone, which is a shitty game that deserved the 6.5, if not lower) and on top of that, even games that end up being hated by the community, like Infinite Warfare, still end up selling by the boatloads. It's a bit generalizing, sure, but money speaks louder than dislikes, and if gamers keep buying shitty games, publishers will keep shitting out shitty games. But that first half of the video was so fucking ass that it ruins the entire thing, and probably his entire channel. It really sucks to see a critic who can't take criticism.

Dunkey played a niche JRPG designed almost specifically for old school fans of the golden age of 16 bit JRPGs. He loudly dislikes JRPG gameplay and reading in games in general by his own admittance.

Anyone who has played the game could tell Dunkey didn't get past the introductory sections before judging the entire game and ironically the game systems actually offer some decent gameplay solutions to things he complained about in the game and in JRPGs in general.

The HP system is neat, but isn't put into use until near the end - which is about 20 hours into the game. And even then, not much is really done with it outside of letting you survive OHKOs by healing and mashing A fast enough.

And as much as I like the lucid feeling of EB, I'd consider it an average game at best that deserves a playthrough for having some good atmosphere, some neat music, but bogstandard gameplay/graphics (even for the time). It's not very good outside of writing and some tracks, and doesn't deserve as much praise as it gets.

Traditional JRPGs were never fun. They were a chore to play through just to experience the story. If the entire game were just a long cutscene you wouldn't feel any different.
Only the action JRPGs like FFA and Secret of Mana, Terranigma, etc were engaging in any way. Even beloved games like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger had painfully boring gameplay, but it was slightly above the average. Tactics Ogre was probably the best 2D JRPG but it flew under the radar because it had piss-poor advertisement because it wasn't a Squaresoft game.
It wasn't until PS1 era where things really started to kick off by adding more mechanics and technology to spice up the otherwise completely boring and uninteresting gameplay of traditional JRPGs.

There's a difference between people that give a shit about gameplay and people that don't. People that are avid defenders of traditional JRPGs do not give a shit about gameplay.

Don't know about Octopath but Dunkey's review about Metal Gear Survive, and most eceleb reviews of Metal Gear Survive were absolutely misleading and didn't get past the first 2 hours of gameplay. Don't think I saw any gameplay of an eceleb where they had a gun which is gotten early on.

There was no "golden age of 16-bit JRPGs". There was a golden age of 16-bit, which maybe had one or two JRPGs included for sales reasons only.
Golden age of JRPGs was early PS1 era, including all the ports and remasters. It effectively died with FFX since it was really hard to sell traditional JRPGs in the PS2 and onward era. It was an archaic gameplay system that was only justifiable by technical limitations, which were inexcusable with PS2 and onward consoles.
It had another short revitalization with PSP and DS but again this was due to technical limitations, ports, and remasters, and the fact that they're handheld consoles. The equivalent of bringing a book around with you and reading it at your leisure.

Yeah as mediocre Metal Gear Survive was their "reviews" pretty much showed they didn't know anything about the game mechanics as if they only played the game for an hour. The dude in the video wasn't really defending the game like it's some masterpiece but was calling out the Youtubes who cry about journalist integrity while being hypocrites. And as shown in this video Dunkey's defense mechanism is to make fun of them or act ironic. This video is pretty fucking unbearable to get through because of Dunkey's lack of understanding how big gaming is now. Even though we're all calling out these shitty companies and journalists there's always going to be a lowest common denominator eating that shit up.
