Console and PC can't be compared 1:1 like that just because some muliplat at the time performed the same or better on a $400 console killer build. That build will struggle more with current AAA games than the base ps4 at this point in time. Try playing Rise of the Tomb Raider or Asscreed Odyssey at 1080p on a GTX 760 (which was part of a $500 console killer build in early 2014: youtube.com/watch?v=6ZGHpG9fZp4) without tweaking it to potato settings. I doubt even a 780ti fares well with those games today without massive tweaking at 1080p. When you buy a $400 console in late 2013/early 2014, you know that even 5-6 years later it will have AAA games better optimized for it with low-level access, and it's done by devs that actually make an effort for that piece of hardware becasue there's a market with 100 million potential customers. For PC the devs will not make much effort to make a demanding AAA game run well on 5 year old mid-range GPUs, don't even try to tell me otherwise. The only GPUs that stand a chance 5-6 years after release are high-end GPUs that would be in builds at least twice the cost of the full launch price of the console.

The problem here is that a base ps4 didn't stay at the $400 dollar price point by 2016 when the Pro came out, it dropped to $200-250 dollars. That's a big price gap from $350, which wasn't uncommon for the Pro in 2017 already. If you want to compare dollar to dollar it is the Pro that needs to be put up against a potato masher now. So if you were building the masher after the base ps4 dropped, the comparison wouldn't be fair at that point, though it would still be relevant if the PC was built in 2014 and hasn't been upgraded since. Many people bought the base ps4 later for $200, for them the dollar to dollar comparison isn't fair. When the ps4 also have graphically impressive AAA exclusives as well as other exclusives that adds to the value of the console that can't be accounted for in a potato masher comparison. This also works the other way of course, a PC has a lot of gaming value not found in a ps4, emulation and a lot of other games, and a PC obviously has many other uses. Any sane person who has the money would want at least a mid-range PC first and foremost, and get a ps4 for exclusives and AAA games that are optimised like shit on PC.

Another point is that such mashers is only what budget builders would bother doing. A mid-range PC for $600-1000 at the time of building is what a PC gamer would realistically want for a good experience, and the price/performance would be better for newer games. There's an important distinction between how cheap you can theoretically go and what people actually would want for the best balanced PC.

But the point of this particular masher is console performance at a console pricepoint, which it definitely achieved.

The PC did have a massive advantage with the CPU at that point in time as well despite being in the same budget, because of the form factor differences. Consoles also need to consider smaller form factor, heat and cooling much more than a desktop, so discrete CPUs and GPUs are impossible. Consoles also need their exclusives to be really worth it, no snoygger or nincel would deny this on Yea Forums either, and both Sony and Nintendo understand this very well as companies.

The most they are going to do is keep limited exclusivity for time frames. They can only ignore the piles of port money for so long when there's a world of people who would rather go to great lengths to emulate than buy the system. I just wish they would put some effort into making things simple and just sell a custom Sony or Nintendo OS you can slap on a PC and dual boot with. They always argue that the PC ecosystem has too many different peripherals to account for when it comes to optimization but there's nothing stopping them from saying that they will only support X chip sets and X GPU's where the PC is free to brute force it's way through. There's also nothing to stop them from them only allowing things like a game pad on multiplayer titles in such an environment. People might cite piracy but piracy is just ultimately a service problem.

Placeholder price aside, its probably an anchoring price to see how much people are willing to spend. They'll lower it by a few hundred in case it doesn't become accepted in the public perception. In return it'll make them look like they're "listening" to the feedback.

Sony and Nintendo IPs get exclusivity to Sony and Nintendo platforms, period. You might be able to stream some games on a PC, but that's it before emulation matures enough to be viable. Timed exclusives are and will only be for third party games where the IP sticks with the third party. Sony and Nintendo want to control the pricing of their games and entice people to buy into their DRM ecosystems, there's no way selling a service on PC makes financial sense for them. Multiplats sales would be dead because of deep discounted Steam sales, cheaper CD keys and piracy on PC. If their exclusives ran on the open PC platform they would be pirated en masse too. That might be a "service problem" but none of those companies are interested in having a much smaller revenue stream because of entitled PC gamers when a 100 million customer base already exists on their own locked-down platforms.

Why is it always these yuropistan countries that put up item listings before shit is even announced?

Consoles have more advantages than just price/performance and exclusives, though exclusives are crucial in and of themselves. Consoles are more convenient, they are much more child friendly, have a smaller form factor so they fit better in a living room TV setup. Xbox One S and X can play 4k blurays and have better support for Dolby Atmos. HDR has been much better implemented on consoles (I know because I've had a hard time getting HDR to work properly on PC). Switch has the portability and handheld function as well. Also, not the least, consoles still have physical media that retain their value much better than a key, and can be resold. The fact that patches and DLC are digital only doesn't change that fact, because anyone that buys or borrows the game from you will get patches for free and be able to buy DLC without having to purchase a new, unused copy. Physical media alone is a good enough reason for many gamers to still play on consoles. So many people don't buy consoles because they're so retarded they're unable to run a game on PC or even just the exclusives, it's because of the reasons I just mentioned.

You know what would be a real riot? Someone paying the money to pre-order the machine and then Sony announcing the PS5 with an MSRP even higher. Instant profit for those who pre-ordered.
