Yuri isn't a very interesting lead. He has almost no character development other than learning to not be such a goddamn lone wolf about anything and everything and instead let his friends help, but all that development is over and done with by 25% of the way through the game. From that point on, Yuri's only purpose is to serve as the catalyst for everybody else's character development and be the de facto leader of the group. He benefits from having some amount of personality, which automatically puts him in the top half of JRPG protagonists, but he's really just a mediocre main character.

It's not that Yuri gets worse, it's that he just doesn't change at all and he's an uninteresting character as a result. It's be fine if he was just another party member, but as the main character of the story he's boring. It doesn't help that what little bit of character development he does have - learning to trust his friends and let them help him instead of trying to do everything on his own - has overlap with Judith's and Rita's character development, but theirs is more gradual and paced throughout the game, instead of happening entirely in the first act.

Yuri's character is far more complex than just that. I mean, he is a justice-driven character and by the end of the game his sense of justice is completely changed from what it was at the beginning thanks to his relationship with Flynn. Yeager is a mercenary/weapons dealer kinda guy who had some history with Raven. We fight him because he is working with the bad guys, but he's a fairly decent guy as far as villains go.
Raven is just a depressed boomer with no real allegiance to anyone. He owed Alexei his life because he saved him in the war, then after he "died" he chose to help the party save the world because he likes the kids now, but also because he is suicidal and getting rid of blastia means he dies for real.

How does Yuri's sense of justice change? He murders everybody that he sees as doing evil but won't be punished, with the arguable exception of Duke, but Duke was just a crazy retard instead of evil jackass. The only reason his actions later in the game aren't vigilantism is because the government starts to support Yuri's actions when Flynn and Ioder realize what a fucker Alexei is.

When Phaeroh targets Estelle he begins to doubt the vigilante shit he's been doing. It's regrettable that the game wrote Cumore and Ragou as comically evil one-dimensional characters, but there are attempts at making them more human-like, especially in Cumore's case. Also, Yuri realizes how pointless it is to just cut down one corrupt powerful guy after another, since another one will replace the last. It's more about Yuri accepting that his and Flynn's concept of justice are supposed to work in tandem instead of being opposites.

Hard to say. They are overly long seasonal fantasy anime in video game form, I think it's fair to say, that people like for their real-time combat and character banter. Also fair to say they grabbed a lot of people while they were teenagers, which we've seen most recently with Vesperia being highly regarded only to get a lot teardowns on its recent re-release. Still haven't played it yet so I'm not speaking for myself on that one.
If I had to try to make sense of Sheena; childhood trauma and shunning made her self-conscious, living in a ninja village sent her down a physically fit career path, finished the job. A lot of her backstory doesn't add up.

This is how I feel about any game that still has arte tiers.
If you've been bothering to master passives that increase status effect chances, that should help with gaining souls.
I forget how long it took for me, but by endgame it was pretty easy to hit a status ailment each combo so that I was constantly attacking. At least in non-boss battles.
