The 90s all of that was free to enjoy. Things could be FUCKING RAD and you could be excited about it. Advertising was all about the excitement the product could bring into your life and everyone loved it.

Remember the original Splatoon commercial that Nintendo aired a few years ago? "You're a kid, you're a squid" It's a bit dated now, but the point still stands. That commercial was universally shit on because it was trying to evoke that 90s style joy and fun that could be brought from a product. But everyone called it cringe.

Or maybe our parents went through the same shit and we're just nostalgia blind and older so we realize how the world works. Either way shits changed man.

People that grew up in the late 80s and 90s built the backbone of internet culture and so everyone must pay homage to it because it is church dogma.

Give it a few more years and Fortnite will be part of that too. It's the latest big collective cultural experience, and people are starting to get sick of hipsters hating on it just cause kids like it.

The technology at the time was perfectly developed enough that kids got to enjoy good television and comfortable & easy life
The technology at the time was also JUST poor enough that we weren't fully in to digital shit yet, so we had most things be physical.
The best part, however, is the way it affected our values and taste.
For example, we grew up playing games with shitty graphics, until games had god tier pixel graphics, which makes us admire and respect the work that went to making such art.
Second, because we grew up with "poor" 3d technology / graphics, we got to see devs be really creative with modelling, textures and art styles - aka, we got games that had SOUL. Nowdays most games just try to be as realistic as possible so that they don't need to be so have art direction anymore.
Third point, is that the games were made in an era before microtransactions and earlyaccess bullshit, meaning when a game was released, it was RELEASED, which means there were as little bugs and as much content as possible.
These days we get unfinished shit that get patched for a year or two, and if it's multiplayer, it's just until the game gets killed and you'll never be able to play it again.

I was born in the late 90s, so you'd probably consider me a "Zoomer" (even though I don't consider myself one) but I've played most of those games and grew up playing about half of them.

It's fucking unfair to be born too late, but to be fair, you're always going to miss something. You'd have to be omnipresent in order to get the full zeitgeist of a particular era.
What I can say, and I said this earlier in the thread, is playing Sonic Adventure 2 is a depressing experience for me because it speaks to how the world was having just as much fun without me partaking in it. I don't know why I single SA2 out, I guess it just feels like a very "childhood" type of game.

That level of freedom and exploration of the real world is something I have never known and may never know.

last good decade to be a kid, early 00´s were okay, but since the end of the 90´s its has been downhill.

This. when a game released, it was RELEASED to quote you word for word. No patches unless something fatal lurked in a certain part of a game and you didn't wait for a patch, you just avoided that part as best as you could. Cheat codes for skins and big heads/characters/alt colors would be DLC today, some games have DLC that would equate to buying the base game ten times over. And I know some snot-nose is gonna come at me but the video game characters today are missing something. Gex wasn't the best series, but the character had a pull. Even pure shit like Clayfighter had a pull that kept you playing. If Gex released today people would trash the fuck out of him, and do just that. Back then, it was funny as shit seeing a cartoon mascot not being a Mario or Sonic. He was PG/PG-13 and a cut above the rest. Enter the Gecko came at the right time, There wasn't anything else like it.

Good call on the lack of artstyle, the push for realistic HD graphics are running the budget of the average games to tens of millions if not hundreds.
