There was also the problem with economic troubles in the U.S which made people see trips to the moon as a waste of money that could used elsewhere. Even the space shuttle suffered greatly from this and what we got was not even close to what was proposed. What was supposed to be an entirely reusable system to get the shuttle up there became the three giant rockets that get dumped after spending their fuel.

The moon landings were just a prestige thing. Scientifically speaking, these missions had little to no value. It's much less expensive to send probes to get the same results. This is what we're doing now.

The closest place is Mars, and we're only just now starting to be able to actually send people over there, and even then the whole reason for the push to reach the moon was to one-up Russia. Aside from saying "we've got better scientists than you!", there isn't really much benefit to going to other places in space beyond orbital satellites, at least not until we've got some pretty advanced terraforming technology.
