Probably a 2D "platformer."
In quotes because you don't actually jump from platform to platform, you float around and explore and stab enemies with your spiky bits. Perhaps a Metroidvania in the vein of something like Song of the Deep.

Likely a platformer where you use your poisonous body to deter being eaten by predators. in the beginning you can't use your poison and move at the same time so enemies will try to bait you out of playing defensively. Subduing enemies gives you more energy to surge through the water and more duration for poison usage but the mobs can eventually anticipate your momentum and turn it against you.
NPCs and 'villages' tend to avoid you because of your poison and because a huge migratory path of fellow sea slugs moved through the area already (leaving you, the straggler, behind to pick up what's left and figure out where they went)
Over time you can collect allies who are immune to your poison as well as other sea slugs who fall back to receive you.
When you're not in combat, it's just comfy caravan-esque nomadic traveling.
