That was when I learned that those madcap russians decided there needed to be controllers that affect you just by being in proximity (through walls) so it's a race to find them and take them out

Well a few low yield, wide range munitions to kill a fuckload of mutants and clear out most of the Stalkers would make studying a lot easier. Without them bothering the Ecologist teams they can focus on avoiding the anomalies and research.
