The first several chapters explicitly said he had no friends whatsoever, and the only time anyone would ever pay attention to him was when they mocked him for being a huge jackass
Then never mind he hung out with half the class all the time

Because the parents restricted the kids from hanging out with him, you can see this happening multiple times.
It's not that they hated him, it was that they couldn't hang out with him.
Once they grew up they couldn't get restricted by the parents, it's a simple development.

They show flashbacks of him chilling with Shikimaru, Choji, and Kiba all the time, that's where the retcon is

And we also see them getting separated by the parents, as I just said.

Almost all the sealed kids were hated. Only the negroes tolerated them and that's because it stopped them rampaging.

Shikamaru and chouji were always acquaintances with Naruto. Shikamaru and chouji were the only other losers in his class, naturally they all gravitated towards each other. Shikamaru didn't care enough to actually be friends with Naruto, and Chouji felt like Shikamaru sufficed enough due to their Clan's unique camaraderie.
Not being friends with someone doesn't mean you hate them.
