They're the paralogues. You have to battle for them, and they each take up one slot of battle time.
They seem to usually have some good rewards, so best to do them.

You get the month to do them at least, not sure if they roll over to the next. Don't think there's anyway to back out of exploring either.

guys i played awakening 5 years ago can i get a quick rundown on games i should play before three houses (or just the order in which to play)
i am going on a holiday and wont have much to do during travels so i could hamfist a lot.

3 houses is it's own thing, the original games, it's DS remakes and Awakening are linked together, Path of Radience and Radiant Dawn are together and the SFC games are connected
