I'd rather people not shoehorn in a boss into their level unless the level is specifically built to have one where it makes sense to include it. Almost all mario bosses suck, regardless of whether they're vanilla or custom. Boss rushes in particular are a chore to play through.

Checkpoints do exist and there's no kaizo stuff in it, just other kind of jank and challenge.
I think certain bosses are fine. Boom Boom is a good general one because he is more of a large enemy with a bit more hp than a boss. Takes very little time to kill him.
Bowser can be frustrating, especially Meowser because of how much time they take. I think they work well in clown-mobile sections.

Bit Crusade 3 is an adventure series of Mario levels that play in the traditional sense (scaling difficulty, hidden rooms and level theming). So if you like traditional Mario stages you’ll probably like these. The “game” will eventually utilize all 5 styles so there’s a little something for everyone. Every stage has five red coins hidden within that unlock a super bonus room at the end.

Bowser's problem is he has so much health you either need to make an alternate way to defeat him or an endless supply of powerups or something to hit him with. I mean, there is no 2D mario game where Bowser was defeatable without one of those. SMB it was the axe at the end of the castle, SMB3 it was letting him fall through a breakable floor, SMW he gave you constant mechakoopas to hit him with and Peach gave you mushrooms, and NSMB it was the axe again iirc

There is no excuse for using a vanilla boss when there is so much you can do in the editor. I think normal bowser is a good hazard in the SMB/SM3 themes to have to dodge to get to the end of the level, but a tiny room where you have to kill boomboom/bowser normally is really just meh.

I’ve got this level idea themed entirely around Boom Boom having this laboratory where he clones himself, and the level plays around the idea of putting him into the level design since you can have 5 of them in each pipe zone and 10 in all.

Gave it a like, but it could be better. Space section felt a bit random and its not clear where to go, you could easily die from the bottom making leap of faiths. Second section feel also randomly connected to the first one, random boss in a corridor doesn't make much sense. Not bad but not great, imho.
I suck at the game, so a save point before the spin jumping section would be great, otherwise it's too frustrating for me to complete.
really loved the look of it and it was fun to run but my god those wigglers at the start of the autoscroll area felt inconsistent.
This one’s pretty great. At first I was having a lot of trouble but once you start noticing how small your hitbox in the clown car is it feels really fair and I ended up finishing the level much quicker than expected.

It's a solid and I even replayed it to set a starter WR for others to beatl, but the part where you get hardcore bounced under two bumpers while "riding" the big Goomba is quite something I tell you, I foresee some people being frustrated there
trying to think of an interesting way to make something like that desert level in nsmb where you have to hop around on platformers while shit is being thrown down on you.
The boss fights are usually very poorly designed because they stick you in an empty box, give the boss powerups like being giant and flying so you can't easily jump on them, there's not enough space to maneuver around so you keep getting hit, but they compensate for this by giving you and endless supply of powerups and so the boss turns in to a boring damage sponge that takes way longer than it should to defeat.
Your pedestrian ideas of "contentment" mean little to me. Do you think the world cares for your "satisfaction"? I am not unlike an avatar of the world, as far as YOU'RE concerned. My mom has to drive me to soccer practice, but once I return we may continue your education.

A no jumping level with a focus on getting uncomfortably close to rising and falling lava to progress. Includes a lot of big coin/1-up bonus incentives for challenge seekers. I improved this a lot from the previous version to remove tedium (no more mandatory platform waiting for the main objective or p-switch garbo).
Only one person has beaten it thus far... I hope it's not too tough but more clears would be nice.

It's fun watching streamers play my level, some do really well, while others struggle with certain parts, but it helped me understand players more and I know how to improve future stages.
I really wish I was able to go back in and edit it without reuploading, but it's whatever.
I'll be playing some more stages in the thread when I get back from work later.
If anybody wants to find the secret rooms in my level, check above the goomba cage in the basement, and for the other one, use a dry bones shell to jump high above the on/off switch inside the pipe room on the roof.

I like the style and music for 3D World, but the mechanics are too lacking for me to want to make anything out of it. All 3D World levels feel the same in mario maker as it's ridiculously lacking in content compared to the other styles.
3DW I think looks nice but is missing so much stuff to make good levels.
NSMBU looks like ass but has a nice moveset.
I find it impossible to make a level for either.

Level where you are a secret agent sent to infiltrate and destroy a russian submarine. After playing Myers precision level I wanted to make one of my own , but no pixel perfect spike jumps. Tip is that you can use blocks to jump into and fall and because there hitbox is bigger than spikes you wont hit them. Also don't take the music section seriously , I just thought it turned out so laughable bad that I decided to leave it in. Difficulty = very hard

Uh, user, 3D world is missing an absolute shitton of standard objects and features. You can't even put shit on tracks.
I think NSMB gets a pass for the movement options honestly. 3D World has the best movement and engine out of all the styles but it trades way too many objects for it though, it desperately needs some content updates because frankly it feels pretty half assed and unfinished right now. I understand why certain enemies and gizmos aren’t in but omitting stuff like one-way gates, vines, dotted line blocks, seesaws, fire bars, and especially stuff like tracks and the stacking mechanic is unacceptable and I suspect this style was slapped together sometime through development because they knew people would be disappointed if there wasn’t a new one. It has potential and there really are some cool things you can do in the style, but you really have to work around a lot of limitations to make levels work. It feels like a beta MM1 style sometimes and that’s disappointing with all the locked potential it has.
SM3DW is the most limiting style of all, but you are still dumb for talking to that autist. He goes on an "I boo all 3D levels!" rampage every single day.
Oh, I forgot to mention that semi-solid platforms only having one style are also a huge disappointment and makes it much harder to give a level a defining theme. Really makes some levels feel much more artificial.
Just to be perfectly clear I am and that line about booing was just a meme based on the "I hate 3D" guy I threw in at the end. I played and liked two courses from that user. Having a lil giggle at the spergout I inadvertently caused.

I made the level and I assure you 3DW is quite limited, but the nice thing about it is that it's far easier to come up with level ideas in the 3DW style because of that.

Desert world holds alot of hard red coins, but many of them are more challenge based. But the ones that are hidden can be difficult to find! I really wanted a world map and the ability to make secret exits and secret levels but guess we're not getting that... There was some world map builder where we could upload our level codes into the stages but i'd rather spend time making levels for now on the offchance that Nintendo caters to us...(Will never happen).

They're not solid or intresting, there are no decent design decisions. It's like Nintendo levels, but more generic and easy so that even the bottom of the barrel could play them. Also, judging by his posts he is either mentally undeveloped or is a child.
Still awaiting the ability to put blocks and enemies with keys on rails. I've had lots of ideas with that one simple concept but I still can't put them into action because "Oh durr hurr, it might fall off the level and they'll get softlocked" even though enemies do the exact fucking same when they fall off the map.

That's why we create them like that. Because we think this gameplay or look is great.
Many people enjoy Nintendo-esque levels and if anything I'd say there is a lack of them. It's easy finding everything else, but not many actually try or get close to making Nintendo-like levels, which is cool and has its audience. I enjoy them at any rate.

Bowser, Bowser Jr, and boom boom are ok (if not actually fun) if used properly. Standing around endlessly shooting them with fire flowers is a chore.
I've seen Bowser done right, where bowser is more of an obstacle to avoid that can optionally be killed with a fire flower. Your primary objective should be to avoid bowser or to kill him with the environment. That's how he has always been designed.
Boom boom and Jr. are ok if used similarly to Bowser. They also work if the level has an interesting arena to fight them in. They can be killed very quickly with stomps so the tedium is minimal. I feel they can add something to a level if blended with an interesting mechanic.

Here's a warm take, the Koopalings wouldn't really add much.
Nintendo has historically been shit at boss design in 2D Mario for some reason so I don't really think we need more than Bowser Junior given the fact that every single Koopaling fights like him but with a different projectile. I'd rather they add bosses like the broodals at least where the invulnerability phase can be skipped if you're good.
Frankly I'd rather have Wario from SML2 than any other 2D Mario boss, at least he gets to have a form for each theme's power-up.

For a first level the platforming is pretty solid, but it could use some flavor. The level itself looks a little empty and could use some decorating. Coins are also a safe bet and could help guide people because like you said, the timing is pretty tight and the way forward isn’t always totally clear might run out of time if you try to take in your surroundings or take a wrong turn.

Airshipvania: (BQ6-9QH-DNG) - This Metriodvania uses more creative boss fights, shellments, seesaws, and the SMW theme unlike the 1st one.

I'd say you did pretty good, I'm about halfway through the desert and the coins are definitely a step up from the last world on some stages. Also kudos for making night desert stages that don't make me want to tear my hair out from the wind lol.
I'd love a map maker addition and I've heard of that site that makes them but like you said, that time would be better spent on actually making stages. I have been thinking about drawing a splash image for my stages kinda like what joecool has once I make a few more levels, then I could contain all my codes in a single image.

When I gear up to make a new stage, I'll play the last few courses before it to get in the mindset of what the next step should be, if I haven't thought of it beforehand. That's the thing about making sequences of levels, as MM is its hard to convey a sense of progression where the areas feel like they're closely related as you travel between them both aesthetically and in terms of gameplay.
He'll burn himself out eventually. Its funny to me how dedicated he is despite the fact I've never been antagonistic towards anybody in these threads, but you'd think I'd raped his sister and shat in his cereal if you listened otherwise.

They make good use of simple mechanics. They're easy because they are designed to be the start of an adventure and wind up in difficulty as the stages progress. They're chill levels with very few problems give it a break.

I included a way to kill the first one intentionally early if you bring the p switch with you. As for the bomb jumps yes you can do it that way but it’s more than likely you’ll take damage as well, unless the player is gutsy or intentionally trying to break the sequence it’s almost a non issue. I’ll probably tweak it and put it in the patch notes. How’d you bring the red Yoshi with you into the second room? I figured with the high jump you’d have to ditch them until the end of the corridor.
Most people, in particular I was talking about the people making the "hard" levels. As in, as you play through their level you can tell they are bad at the game and do not understand how to implement actual difficulty. You should be able to clear every level you make with 100% consistency or its garbage. You are not some kaizo superstar. You better be a literal god at mario if your level has below a 1% clearance rate because I am sick of seeing "bet you can't beat this" levels that took someone 14 hours to upload which are not difficult at all, but are instead a milquetoast series of extremely precise jumps that must be made within a very small window with no telegraphing.
I actually have a 50% finished SMW world map complete with hidden exit paths etc that I was going to use for my SMW hack in lunar magic way before MM1 was released. Never got around to finishing it but always wished we could use something like it -_-

No it isn't. I have a sub-1% clearance level and I can beat it every time, no problem. If you completely know all the in-and-outs of a level there is literally no excuse for dying in it unless you designed it badly. You should not be struggling to complete your own levels.
Thanks for the feedback, user! You might be right. I designed the level with navigable paths across the top and bottom of the level to encourage exploration and increase replayability, but it does mean that a whole bunch of different shit is going on at once. I'll take that into consideration, thanks. And I'll check your level out as soon as I get a chance!

3D World has some nice unique stuff and a lot of enemies react differently, it's worth making levels for, but it's missing a shit ton of stuff from the other modes as well. There are a lot of things you can't do that you can with the other modes.

Before I was gonna wipe them all out without a second thought but many of them have nice drawings or comments now i kinda dont want to get rid of. It's still a ways off though so i dunno. Ideally if I can get a few people to beta test it for me then the amount of mishaps that get left in will be minimized. If I catch them early then its a non issue and I can quickly reupload it

no, you have to be jumping the entire time until the conveyor. it's a technical level. you have to understand what makes you go the fastest and using the jumps as a form of measurement to get maximum time on the conveyor
Dunno I've experimented with this but even doing long jumps as fast as I humanly can I'm still not quite at the pole
I don't actually know if some combination of normal jumps, long jumps or building up running speed somehow makes you go faster
long jumps all the way i think. i found i did better when I ran for a few blocks before doing long jumps. I tried running until high speed before jumping but I was doing worse

I just went up to the top and then took a leap of faith and hung from the vine (while big mario) and took damage when it bounced off the springboard and the rest was pretty straight forward.

New level, Sandy Superstar Sprint! This one's pretty basic, all things considered. The main gimmick is to keep your Star up at all times, as most of the floor is spiky. The level takes place at an abandoned pipeline in the desert, but for some reason the pipes are full of spikes... I don't think this one's too difficult, probably the easiest level I've made so far.
I have nearly 200 hours on Mario Maker and I'm starting to get burnt out. Most of time is spent making levels and now I just can't see ideas to the end

I'm going to make a collect all 50 coins stage with 49 coins spread out and hidden in bullshit locations all over the beginning of the stage followed by a super long section of a bunch of pixel perfect platforming with no checkpoints. Making players think they missed a coin somewhere. Then right next to the goal I'll put a 50-coin coin.

I had a lot of fun with the Spiny level as well doing a speedrun of it. Got the WR and it only takes 37s to beat once you get all the timing of the jumps figured out. If anybody else wants to try a short speedrun level I suggest they try it (I forgot the code for it though but it's by the same guy who made the Goomba Brothers one)

Been playing it and its fucking great man. The puzzle setups are excellent, that hammer bro one in particular I wish I had thought of for my own yoshi stages. Checkpoints are nicely placed too to prevent excess backtracking.

Practice. Most creators here had Mario maker 1, so they already understand a lot of how the creating engine works.

That's the second time you did that, really love these! Nice spawn kill on the bomb too! I try to satisfy the speedrunners to an extent because many just want to breeze through everything but I know many (me included) who love collectibles so I try to give everyone the best of 2 worlds, I even had a complaint on 1 level in the comments that "without coins the levels are too fast" or some shit kek.
Releasing an underwater ghosthouse later today, it was cancer to create because for some reason smb3 theme has terrible underwater aesthetics if you try to make something look like anything other than corals T_T I tried to make it spooky though and people will feel unsafe at the very least!
I have a lot of practice and I played a shitload of SMM1, yet I'm still slow at making levels. I keep coming up with little ideas, then scrapping them. Over and over.

Really enjoyed this, deceptively challenging when you have the sideways winged blocks. Great job building on the challenge too. It's great on its own but I feel like you could make a great "sequel" to this further building on the challenges even more.
Two nitpicks- the key for the door to go from first to second main section was unnecessary and having the door on the moving block made it a bit annoying when I missed it the first time.
Thanks for playing my dude, just wait until I find a way to implement the Lost Levels style repeating "maze" hallways lol.

I'm starting to feel burnt out. I feel like every level I make ends up janky and ends up with a low clear rate because I tried to do an interesting mechanic I should just make 20 second speedruns or some shit.
I usually like coins, though if I am super pressed for space I'd probably use tracks. Most people turn comments off, so I wanted to make sure everyone knew who suggested what section.

Made a super standard winter night stage. I imagine it's decently speedrunnable but it's also probably a bit easy. It does have a red coin route as well, and a hidden area if you're willing to explore. say hi back to the snowman if you find him.

i ended up making luigi do it. even when over levels frustrated me they felt doable but that shit... even using power ups from luigi build mode i just couldn't get it to happen...
honestly that's one of the easier levels, what part did you get stuck on the two bonzai bills? if that's the case you just let yourself slide down the wall until they pass
i got stuck on the part where you need to wall jump on the wall that's flashing on and off. If the bill was the only thing messing me up i could maybe do the level but u can't even get that far without using scrub mode.

I had a lot of issues creating that part in terms of gameplay because the ant wouldn't appear when and where i wanted it to, and I was so determined to have that ant obstacle there. Aesthetically it bothered me too, but I didn't want to make the wall thicker and possibly mess up that section.
Man that level had some annoying design decisions. A lot of them revolved around the max height jumps, waiting for the spinies, and the length, not to mention the pipes that are just deadends.
you can just fly over everything you don't have to wait for them, pipes are bonus rooms.

No clears yet. Think people have been trying to take it slow, you should be able to just jump and hold right until you need to do a big jump.
My clear time was about 20 seconds.

I liked the escort the thwomp one. It's a fun idea, I enjoy that kind of stuff.
The ice one, there were a bunch of capes and it was all vertical so you had to find interesting uses for the cape instead of just fly over the horizontal level.
And then the short one with the lava subworld it was fine. Short quick platforming. I kept wanting to keep swinging off the claw and jumping over the drybones shell, an indicator would have helped. But I also could have just slowed down a bit.
They were all fun.

The only bomb that's going to be quick enough is if you spinjump the bomb under the rainbow. If you bump it early it breaks and you can't use it though.
The hidden bomb is just there to kill you.
Coins are a bit easy but love the scary feel. SMB3 ghosthouses are the most creepy out of all the themes.

I actually really like this level. I like sprite surfing. Your indicators are really good and intuitive, I've never seen them like that but I knew exactly what you were telling me.
And what I really liked the most was that you used controlled jumps. Not just min and max jumps like a lot of these levels do.
It's quick, it's short enough to where the moving around is forgivable, and you have a checkpoint. It's a fun level.
