Those are very different things.
Esports isn't a scam in some cases, but in a large number of them, namely the most popular ones, it's pumped full of cash by the owners to try and desperately create relevance for their game. Dota 2 skirts this by having the players pay directly for tournament pools, so even though they barely touch the game at all besides to fuck something else up, it still has sizable pools. League of legends and overwatch are good examples of the pools being paid entirely by the owners. I'm sure the games are super profitable so it's not that costly, but it doesn't do much to show interest in the game. And it shows when the games get to their finals and the stadiums/arenas they're buying aren't sold out.
Gaming addiction isn't a thing. It just straight up isn't. No more than phone addiction or TV addiction. It's a luxury, and people overindulge, but it's not physically or mentally harmful. It can exacerbate underlying mental health issues but it is 100% never the cause of them.

Fortnite was massively successful and then dead in 2 years. Even a best case scenario for these kinds of games is a 2 year lifetime. They rape consumers with psychological loops of rewards with built-in shops and access to microtransactions and lootbox gambling. They are purely destructive objects of affection, like drug or alcohol abuse. They don't validate as a sport because they don't validate as interesting, balanced, or reliable enough to warrant it. People been playing baseball for a hundred years. People play one of these retarded games for a month, maybe a year, then it gets replaced by a competitor or a sequel, and in either case the replacement product is dissimilar enough that skills and knowledge learned from the previous game do not carry forward.
In my state, the schools are unironically considering adding "esports" to the sports options, which will not actually render itself in any other way than making students even more retarded. Its only a matter of time before this silent devil and snuck in the backdoor under everyone's noses and public school students will want to and be encouraged to play fucking lootbox microtransaction flavor-of-the-month twitch games at school.
Alternatively this could all be avoided by decreeing videogaming over 3 hours a day as a destructive habit, which would seriously challenge the validity of the kind of "dedication" it takes to be a "pro esport gamer".
