Stadia is one way, in an ideal world (for those who don’t like cheating) games would be run on the cloud and every pixel would be delivered to the client, and they’d only be restricted to sending keyboard and mouse input to the server. This comes with a whole bunch of other problems, but ignore those for a moment and really think about it. If the client was never trusted to do anything or handle any data, there would be no hacking. There’d be data to input into our ESP or aimbot calculations and there’d be no data to write, such as in our “no recoil” or “no spread” code. This is pretty much how consoles control hacking, by completely locking out the user. It’s not perfect and people do cheat on consoles, but because consoles actively fight against user input it is much more rare.

Now that's an extreme solution but you can still move a lot of calculations server side to prevent cheating. For example CS:GO used to have bullet spread calculated client-side, which would let a cheat manipulate that calculation and nullify it. Then they patched it by moving that calculation server-side. You do that with as much calculations as possible without introducing lag to the player. For example movement has to be calculated client side or it will be very laggy, but the server can still run checks on the movement periodically and correct it, which will prevent teleportation. The negative of that is if the player has a bad internet connection you'll get stuttering and keep getting teleported backwards, but that's better than having cheaters teleport behind the other team and kill everyone instantly.

For an example of a game with dedicated servers that really fucked this up, look at the ARMA games.

It uses an engine which defies common sense. It is probably the least secure, most insane multiplayer game design I’ve ever seen. It’s bizarre.

In ARMA the client is trusted with EVERYTHING. It’s not just trusted by the server to do client operations, it’s trusted by the server to do server operations. There are no words.

I don’t think I have to explain to you how devastating this could be should a curious person figure out how your engine works and decides to tinker with it.
I don’t think I have to explain to you how devastating this WILL be should a malicious person figure out that same information and decides to use it for trolling or malicious purposes.

You should never, ever allow a client to be in the position to send code or script data to other clients. It’s a recipe for disaster.
It doesn’t matter if it’s encrypted, encoded, compiled VM opcodes or whatever. It will eventually be abused by somebody.
If you must make the other clients react to a client command or event with the code being run on clients, setup a strict system which will allow them to react to only specific commands or events, with proper validation. As I said earlier, the method above defies common sense. This IS common sense. I shouldn’t have had to explain that.

The reason that all this is possible is because each client is the master of it’s domain. You are a god of your own personal universe.
There is no checks and balances, there is no central authority, it’s just a complete security failure.

Anti-cheat won't be cost effective, there's a lot of development time in creating an anti-cheat. Why not just get an outsourced anti-cheat? Nobody can protect a game as much as somebody with it’s source code, nobody can treat it with as much tender care as somebody who is personally invested in the outcome and once somebody beats an anti-cheat like Punkbuster, VAC, BattlEye, Hackshield (the list goes on) they have the ability to cheat in any game that uses that system. If there’s rampant cheats in other games using that same anti-cheat (BF3 or Modern Warfare anyone?), I personally would not use it. Obviously, both the anti-cheat and games are being attacked because they are super popular but that is precisely the point.

Security through obscurity throws off the lazy and stupid, and it will add one more layer of armor to your security for those who are not stupid. Production time for hacks and updates will increase and you may even stop some very smart yet very lazy people in their tracks (they exist, like me for example).

Sorta, but not really. They disabled them many years ago in official servers, mostly, you can only see sprays that you already have downloaded, ie from playing a game with the same guy on a custom server.
I see why they disabled them (potentially illegal shit being downloaded onto other players computers indefinitely (yes, sprays are kept until you uninstall the game)), but I miss them.

for example, i ran around with pic related in PvP on elsword for months, no one ever suspected a thing because i was legitimately good at the game on top of cheating, but anyone with a trained eye would have known from a mile away that something wasn't right
but they had no way to actually look at my stats and all of my mods were client sided, so to them it looked like they were still doing normal damage
there was also a hack that let you generate up to 2bil of the ingame currency in under an hour and it took them months to patch that too
the server economy never recovered, i still have a few alt accounts with bils on them that i abused the shit out of that on and never got banned
