Does TTYD need a remaster? No, most everything about the game is timeless. However, a high-publicity rerelease of TTYD or OG PM would be great for building hype for a proper continuation of the series and require comparatively little effort on Nintendo’s part.

I don't, I blame both Tanabe and Miyamoto, but you have to look at the facts here. Tanabe's blame is greater than his. Miyamoto no longer has as much input as he once had in Mario. Odyssey is the greatest example of that, where he was unconfortable with the direction Koizumi was going in but they still did it anyway. If anything now that Koizumi is at a higher position than before, there is a chance he would make sure a new PM would work, if Nintendo has any intention of bringing the franchise back, that is.
Then again there is the part about japanese culture with the "respect your elders" idea, so most old devs will hold onto that, but new ones are the ones that actively challenge him.

Somewhat unrelated but can we even consider SS and CS "canon" to the first three Paper Mario games? There are the things like Mario's house being different, interesting towns being all replaced by toad towns, and other things that don't make it seem like they're in the same universe.
