Slayers is a masterpiece and still one of my favorite anime. I used to own that shit on VHS back in the day. Well, the original 3 seasons that is. Revolution/Evolution was fucking trash and frankly a blemish on such an amazing work.

Watch the first two seasons and then the OVAs and movies (they are prequels but the characters are not properly introduced in them). Slayers TRY is a mixed bag, the dragon character is really bad but they try to expand the lore a bit. Last seasons are a bad reboot.
Try is where it starts going downhill with obnoxious shit.

but this is correct.
OVAs were kind of fun, but aren't required, and you could sleep soundly knowing you skipped them. the movies are more of the same.
