Wrestling, specifically heel/Rudo. Sakurai even said they didn't give him Fire moves to focus on that motif.

It's still the biggest spinoff to come out of the franchise in years. If they were pushing him that early on, he would have made it. As it were, Takahashi took the owl for an unconventional fighter and Sakurai took the tiger for his love of NJPW, neither for GF's "promotion."

FUNFACT: This generally isn't what dark is about in Japan, it translates to evil type or something close to that. The moves are all about being sneaky and underhanded, not overflowing with 3edgy5me darkness energy. For example Sucker Punch is called surprise attack in Japan, and you have other moves like Nasty Plot, Revenge, Payback, Beat Up, Foul Play, etc.

Incineroar is dark type because he's underhanded, he's the heel wrestler who fights dirty. His moves don't really have "darkness energy" because that's not really the point of the character.

It's a starter final evolution so is inherently popular. The general fanbase seems to enjoy it as a design and concept too, lots of fanart and such.
It's the single most popular Pokemon in the official competitive format, VGC Doubles, because of how perfect it is for that metagame mechanically.

Some of the Pokemon community dislike it for a few reasons that include
- It doesn't fit with its previous evolutions well. Litten and Torracat are just cats, they're quadrupedal, and they are just cats with stripes. Then suddenly this thing is a bipedal pro wrestling cat.
- Bara fanbase.

Additionally, some Smash fans dislike it for the grinch fiasco as well as the fact it's "yet another Pokemon rep" which is very predictable.

That's where the heel aspect comes from: in a 180 from Litten, the final form is fully enjoying itself and doesn't give a damn if that means fucking someone up in the process.

What. They share no fucking similarities as types. In fact they're almost polar opposites in terms of how Pokemon defines its type characters.

Fighting is about raw attacking power and is generally "honourable". Fighting type moves are all about damage output and few have secondary effects. The ones that do have secondary effects are usually about evening the playing field (Brick Break).

Dark is about being evil or having malicious intentions. Few Dark type moves have high natural damage output but almost all Dark type moves have secondary effects or situational benefits that prey on the enemy.

And don't give me that "I meant mechanically" shit. These are mechanical, but even then if you by them as defensive typinges they're entirely different. In that context, saying "Dark and Fighting are the same" is like saying "Fire and Water are the same".

Kids don't really have an option though. I'd be interesting in seeing if kids prefer the new designs over the old designs for sure, but pokemon gives them the shitty designs and that's all they get. You can't say that they prefer the new designs simply because that's what they are given.

Incineroar is built but somehow feels lanky. It also doesn't help he has big goofy arms and small legs so his walking animation was something to laugh at

Chesnaught and delphox are so terrible that to this day I believe their designs were intentionally botched so people would gravitate towards greninja for easier shilling.
They tried to do it again in gen 7 but forgot to make one of the starters not look awful.

Being by popularity was only done with Lucario. Greninja was chosen before Gen 6 was even revealed to the public, being chosen on design alone. It was a very lucky coincidence that Greninja was the most popular starter of that Gen. Incineroar was in the same boat as Greninja, being chosen just on design.

Landorus recieves obscene amounts of usage but it's not terribly popular. It's just good at what it does. So is greninja, but it is popular.

People were expecting Litten to evolve into a badass big tiger fucker that's more monster than anything, instead they got a bara furry. Also, it's a pro-wrestler and it's sub-type isn't fighting, which is truly retarded even though everyone's sick of the fire starter always being fighting.
Now me? I love the fucker. Pro-wrestler aesthetic that looks nice when you forget about what he looked like before he evolved. I changed my mind about him after I played him in Smash, I used to hate him. He's fun.
