I've tried diligently several times to get into it, but can't . I still won't give up on it yet, though - same shit happened with me and Deus Ex. Tried that one like five times and always dropped it before Liberty Island was over. Now, its one of my favorites.

It really depends on where you got the game from. Steam includes version 1.2 of the patch, I believe, and that should handle any horrible game-breaking bugs. Otherwise, I think his basic patch is alright for a new player, as it's only supposed to have bug fixes.
Don't get the plus patch. Only good thing he added in was the cut histories, and even those won't be missed.
