What's the best way to play Mafia in current year? I'm thinking about picking it up on GOG.
GOG is by far the easiest way, but, the version they have doesn't have the original's soundtrack (which is mostly Django Reinhardt pieces). It can easily be restored however. Threads on GOG have info about how to do that.

My friend is the one who had me get it with him, but we were in one of the early missions (probably the fucking first, honestly), and it was a pretty generic feeling TPS when he had been saying the game was basically MH with guns. He lost interest, so I lost interest. I imagine the game probably did turn into MH with guns shortly after. He doesn't play EDF 4 anymore either and now just sits on FFXIV all day when he's on, that cunt.

I wouldn't say that's true, I see it get love whenever it's mentioned, it just doesn't get talked about very much here.
It's a sort of ''infiltration'' game that starts out simple but grows in complexity as it goes on. I wouldn't say the game gets particularly hard at any point though, but it never gets stale either. There's always a new layer or mechanics thrown once in a while.
There are 2 central mechanics, jumping real high without any real penalties, which is self-explanatory, and the ability to ''rewire'' stuff, like rewiring light switch to open the door, at any time on the screen. The game uses it in very different scenerios, like one level making you open a way to the bottom without even entering the building.
The scenerio is simple and engaging enough while providing you a few different ways to play along. There's also a lot of jokes in the conversations, mostly coming from the main character. I really liked that aspect too, but it's probably really hit or miss for most people.

Maybe not the happiest with the direction but I know I can still appreciate what it offers. It's like I tell the Resident evil fags with 6, so I shouldn't be hypocritical. Not new to the series, been playing them all since 2001, but really only 1 today. I just get salty sometimes and minus because the overbearing representation I suppose, my way to rebel in some small way. It's not very often I enter a dmc thread and feel that mutual understanding and it's lead to that.
DMC1 is dated but still good on its own merits and a very important piece of video game history; RE6 is a legitimate contender for worst AAA game this decade.
Totally understandable. I'm in the DMC5 thread right now and there's definitely a reverence for 1, but you don't always get that. Personally I think 5 > 1 = 3SE, and my justification for 5 being the best is just that it's the first DMC since 1 without a glaring flaw (besides the pacing of its story which isn't that important when it goes where it needs to and has plenty of strong character moments).
Not a chance that there aren't a dozen garbage AAA shooters that are weaker than RE6 on a mechanical level at the bare minimum. Fuck's sake, two of the worst AAA games of all time (both also shooters) came out in the past 9 months in F76 & Anthem.

This. My first time playing the game I had played action games that followed in its footsteps first and had a completely warped idea of what this 2001 game was going to be doing. I was much more fond of it my second time because I better understand that it's the progenitor (barring a couple of PS1 precursors) to a certain variety of action game and still has elements that are rarely surpassed by its successors (direct or spiritual) to this day.

7 was just too padded, I dislike the party system and the boss design wasn't as good as Felghana and Origin. 7 is one of my least favorites. I prefer 1 and 2 over it. The only ones I actually prefer 7 to are the dogshit ones like Ys 5 and the original Ys 3.

It lacks a lot of things, but I think it was more enjoyable to play through for the first time than any other game I can remember that isn't in my template. What's about it that you dislike that much?
I could never really get into it but the frame story was kind of memorably weird.
loved the start at the Great Plateau and a bit outside of that, Hateno village and Kakariko were cool but the lack of enemy variety, weapon breaking, lack of content in the overworld and repetitive shrines left me unimpressed
I felt like after the Great Plateau you'd seen everything the game had to offer, and I'd only ever be rewarded for exploring with junk like Korok Seeds, it made me actively avoid exploring because I'd get either a seed, a piece of amber or a sword that breaks in 5 hits, and the weapon breaking makes you avoid combat since all you're doing is trading weapons and getting little to no gain
it's a good basis for the sequel at least, I'm sure I'll enjoy that a lot more

I think I agree that the weapon breaking, enemy variety and repetitive shrines are fair complains, but to me, the overworld had something interesting to find no matter what direction I chose to go. Not really unique items, but maybe some interesting landmark or something.
Also, have you played RE1? Is it like LM, where the whole game is set in the mansion and you go through it by exploring each room and stuff?
I really want some other games located in only one place that you need to explore, but I don't tend to like metroidvanias...

There were obvious locals the brought-up nostalgia goggles like the ranch, but why should I care about the Zonai Ruins, Lanayru Promenade, etc.? I'm just teasing. But I do think I'd be more interested to see 3x3's based on the types of games people enjoy, rather than 3x3's built around nostalgia. Mine is based a lot on nostalgia, but as I get older I find myself enjoying a specific genre more than others, so my 3x3 might eventually reflect that.

You don't need to still play a game for it to have had a long-lasting effect. You just need strong memories associated with it. I'd bet that most people who aren't BSing make their 3x3 by going off of games they have the strongest memories with. It doesn't mean they still play them all.
Not to mention, you seem to think there's some actual intellectual benefit to playing a fucking video game, which, unless you're still in the developmental stages of childhood where you can actually gain something from games that target that demographic, is bullshit. It's a hobby with no worthwhile intellectual gains to be had. Either enjoy it for what it is or go pick up chess or a quality book.
