Nintendo chose the DLC, not the base newcomers. Sakurai clarified that he decided all the base newcomers like Ridley, Banjo, and Isabelle while the DLC were pooled by Nintendo.

That was going from one game to the next (same for Isabelle and Dark Samus). No character has ever been an Assist Trophy and playable in the same game.

Playing devils advocate here, but I think it would be an easy fix to have player characters and assist trophies be in the same game. Just give the assist trophy a special skin if it pops up in a match in which the playable version of the character is also present, make them gray with red eyes as a reference to the world of light, make them into sparkly rainbow beings as if it's just their spirit essence, it doesn't matter. It's so trivial and shouldn't stand in the way of anything.

How can we fix Joker? I think the rate at which he loses rebellion gauge when he's hit with Arsene out should be drastically increased, and I think his amazing frame data should only be applied when Arense is out. Without Arsene, his entire moveset shouldn't be safe on block.

I know we're all shitposting here but I wouldn't even be surprised if Alucard got in at some point. Maybe not this game but if Konami is on board for Smash 6 than he has a good shot. He's probably the most fleshed out AT and Sakurai considered him over the Belmonts at one point. He'd be a cool way to wrap up the Castlevania content in the game as a whole by representing the Igavania part of the series.

What I understood was that Nintendo wanted an SMT-related character, and Atlus told them to use Joker so they could advertise their most recent game. It makes sense when you think about Joker as an SMT representative, even though he kind of isn't at all.
