Edgy school shooter Gohan is shit, yes, as for 16's speech, it was never going to be better than the original, they're a comedy series so you shouldn't have expected them to make 16's speech emotional or serious. The series is great for parody versions of the characters, not to replace the real ones. You may prefer the comedic versions to some extent, but even if you do they can never replace the originals because they're built upon them in the first place.

It's not SJW levels of bad (YuGiOh abridged came closer in that regard) but they did grow softer for the sake of making the show more family friendly. It's not unusual for internet people do to this when they strike gold.

I feel like the series did a good job with a few of the more serious retold bits. I think Gohan's transformation is done better here than the official english dubs and the beam struggle at the end of the fight might be my favorite version.
But you're right, them going from comedy parody to an attempt to just be a redub is weird.

Its not just weird, I think it doesn't work all that well on the actual established characters that have the most personality like Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan. The side characetrs that have barely anything to them are redubbed very well, but they have to understand that nothing will replace the actual main characters for the people who grew up with them, so that's not something they should be aiming to do.

Some characters they do better.
Some they do about the same.
Some they do much worse.

Like, look at Goku.
Yeah, the Goku we grew up with was some stalwart champion of good.
The Goku in the original Japanese version was some kind of retarded fight autist. All that ally of good, nightmare to you, secretly super responsible Goku stuff was added in by localization people who wanted the main character to sound more like a hero and less like someone who just liked getting into fights for fun.

And the DBZA character is just that, the original Jap version fight autist, but blown out of proprtion and overly exaggerated, which is what a parody is supposed to be.
Vegeta's prideful arrogance is blown out if proportion as well

The implication is that they're taking themselves a bit too seriously as a "legitimate dub" lately, i.e Gohan's transformation scene actually being a redub (it's just the original Japanese sequence line for line except with their voices and cover of Unmei no Hi) and some other scenes being done with relatively "serious" writing.
It's been doing them pretty good actually and DBZA as a whole is improving, but you'd still get the occasional retard going "this is better than the original show" or otherwise putting Abridged in even the same 'category as either sub or dub DBZ which can get obnoxious and misses the point of it being a casual parody.
