They have the advantage that the developer gets a steady flow of cash, so he knows how many people he can hire.

The con is that 1) there is no reason to finish the game 2) you need to make constant updates, even when its neccessary to update the backend stuff to make mechanics or code better 3) in order to increase the inflow of money you try to spread yourself too thin.

Overal I prefer kikestarter since it just allows them to bang out the game, but in practice a new dev using crowdfunding ends up wasting the money because he doesnt know how to pace it.
Also unlike kickstarter a patreon user cannot sell his ass to a publisher or epic store without supporters pulling the plug on him

I've seen a couple of patreons where the person getting money is receiving funds to develop a product, and that's always rings alarm bells to me.
Surely they're gonna take their time releasing it, as once it's released, the patreons will go away.

It's a good model in the sense that projects are funded based on demand. If someone liked it, they pay to support it, and the quality grows as more people support it.
It's an awful model in the sense that it never works out that way. Fantastic and inspired projects fester at the bottom of the list while trash like furry artists and OP get tens of thousands of dollars a month just by playing the game and leading people on for as long as possible. Patreon is a bad system because it's funded primarily by idiots who are loose with their money.
