The answer to your question is that Nintendo had dominated the video game market from about 1985 to 1996. During which time, they dominated it so hard that the brand became synonymous with video games in general and people used it as a generic term to describe all video games, just like how Band-Aid has become synonymous with all small adhesive bandages and how Kleenex became synonymous with tissues.

Couple that with apparel companies looking to cash in on nostalgia booms and you have young adults and teenagers running around and acting gobsmacked every time they see something with an old NES controller motif or something that references older Nintendo games.

In America. And Nintendo dominance only lasted until 1989 when the Genesis released. In Japan NEC's PC Engine successfully competed with the Super Famicom and the Saturn of all things outsold the N64. Nintendo was never particularly popular in Europe where home computers and Sega consoles were markedly more common.
