2 is worth playing for at least an hour or so just as a history piece. It makes you appreciate 3 that much more.
It also gives you a basic understanding of what makes action games satisfying. It's easy to take the fundamentals for granted, until they're gone.

This. First DMC feels more like survival horror than every single later entry in series. Item management, limited movelist, little obnoxious camera etc. Those were exactly my first thoughts while playing it as a kid. Feels like Resi, but the tank controls were gone, and that's why i fell in love with it.
