I think I get what OP is saying. The way Darkstalkers is repped outside of its own series like in TVC and MVC doesn't really capture the stylized animation of the series, losing some of its essence as a result.

The big problem is the transition to 3d models. If you put in a lot of extra modelling work like Guilty Gear Xrd you can still have all your neat animations but it's quicker and easier to do as little as possible and make do with the existing model.

I think they are just "burn" on her skin. On or two of her victory sprites have her with alternative costumes showing her legs, and there are no bats to be seen.

That's exactly what we wanted back on SF IV... fuck, I still wish that either on a future vs game, or a new Darkstalkers game (lol) besides the obligatory 3D Morrigan, we get "sprite Morrigan" as a secret extra character.

Speaking of Smash, this is NEVER happening, but can you imagime all the fan art it would have to be made if Demitri made it into Ultimate on it's current roster? All the DLC budget would have to go on his final Smash... we all know which one.

One thing I find pretty funny is that among Japanese communities they jokingly refer to Darkstalkers as the "western" fighting game due to its cartoony animations actually.

I get why 3d is used now but it's a shame, you really can't do animations like that in 3d.

She is also "less" evil than most demons, though she doesn't show that side that much (stoping Pyro from destroying the world while keeping it secret, sparing Lilith's life and fusing with her... and that's it for the Darkstalker canon)

didnt see this post before but you're exactly correct. and i know im being redundant here, but 2.5d and 3d fighting games forego a lot of the animation techniques employed by older sprite based games that made them so dynamic and interesting to look at
even the lack of something as simple as smears really detracts from the appeal, but at least the new guilty gear games knew enough to maintain them

What a boring character

Hot-blooded thrill seeker guised under a veneer of otherworldly class and elegance. This is obvious stuff if you just look at how she animates and how her VA emotes. She literally sprouts of of the ground, calmly saying "Please amuse me!" Then proceeds to grab you, transform her wings into a jetpack and slam you into the ground while shouting "EAT PAVEMENT!" at the top of her lungs. She then summons a cloud of bats atop which she sits, cross-legged and calmly quips "Let's play again sometime!" This is all basic visual media stuff. Show, not tell.

By the standard of the time she was made? This was gold, specially for fighting game main characters. The bases for her personality were then complemented and exalted by her animations.

Don't know If you have noticed, but most of the more iconic videogame characters of that time, are the simpler ones.

The slapstick stuff is part of the overall aesthetic, not any individual character's personality.

It works for Guilty Gear and even Blazeblue still, there is a lot of goofy shit on those games, while also keeping the serious, sexy and badass elements.

We all know Darkstalkers can work in modern times, is just that modern Capcom is not the company to make it happen.

I think I know what artist you're talking about, I stumbled upon them once on pixiv and looked through their stuff myself. it's weird as I liked their art style but guro is too much for me.
