They don't bother to translate text, even when there are literal subtitles in another language that you're supposed to be able to read. They also get ridiculously out of sync if you use anything like a chromecast or apple tv.

Nothing is really memorable about Akira except the superb animation, but all in all it's pretty forgettable imo. GitS was not only memorable but inspired a lot of subsequent works like The Matrix which alone is testament of its lasting influence in the West. I would not rate the former as one of the great films, animation or otherwise, you need to watch at least once in your life.

Now that I'm older, I can't watch anime. It's such a cringey melodramatic style, I feel like I'm patronizingly told how I should feel at every moment, and the production style is un-intentionally chaotic. Rollercoasters with shrill voices of children screaming in stilted gasps of awe, surprise, anger and glee... It's like stabbing myself in the ear for half an hour. The garish visuals, low-budget animation and juvenile aesthetics just put a campy cherry on it.

And that specific episode was one of the last nails in that coffin. Such tripe honestly. No nuance. No attempt to discuss the ethics with any degree of maturity or connection to the real world. It's an unmitigated failure in literally every way it's possible for a work of ostensible art to be.
