I've been using a pirated copy for the past 3 years and have never had a problem getting a newly released patch for it.
Though the only mods I've ever used were HIP, CK2+, and the Warhammer one which take ages for them to update to a new patch anyways.

I'm slowly getting a grasp on it but like you said using preexisting events and looking at how other mods are set up is a Godsend.

My current issue is some events conflicting with each other when they shouldn't so I got that to work out. The amount of information about modding is helping me along.
