in the next few years competitive gaming may take over even more and hamstring all potential innovation for the medium just like halo and cod did over a decade ago. while we are not at that position just yet, games have been pretty decent since 2015, we are dangerously close.
what' may be worse however is that young people who grew up with the industry in the last decade know only trash, and shit like Skyrim/Witcher 3 will become the benchmark for rpgs to them and they will be obsessed with competitive gaming they partook in during their youth, therefore the trajectory for innovation looks even bleaker. by the late 2020s, people's fondness for the late 00s to 2010s will blind them to what came earlier such as the 1990s as they will have neither the knowledge or experience. these people will become developers.
