Ys VIII or Bloodstained, fine Yea Forums folks?

I’m learning towards Ys, but Celceta was kinda boring. Meanwhile, I had great fun with the Curse of the Moon Bloostained spin-off.

Ys VIII
1. It's the one you're leaning the most given how you're a Ys fan.
2. Bloodstained Ritual of the Night is a very, very, very different game from Curse of the Moon (Curse is a traditional Castlevania, Ritual is a Symphony of the Night Castlevania).
3. A lot of people preferred Curse over Ritual, considering it the superior game.
4. Always stick to what you know. Don't let external hype push you into buying something you aren't sure to / aren't interested.

Curse of the Moon is unironically better than actual Bloodstained, especially in terms of boss design.
Ys 8 is by far the best party based Ys title.

Ys.
Bloodstained was a piece of shit.

You will get more mileage for Bloodstained.

hahahahaha no, Bloostained is short af with no replay value. Ys games starting with Seven provide +40 hours of gameplay easily.

Not really. Bloodstained is like 35 hours at most. Ys 8 goes up to 50-60

I had some fun with Seven but never finished it and Celceta had good gameplay improvements but terrible story and level design. I wish Ys was like Origins, VI and Felghana...

I’m mostly worried about how Bloodstained performs on base PS4s, I’m scared it’ll be a bugfest with terrible framerate like the Swotch version

Wait, Bloodstained is longer?

Bloodstained fucking sucked; it was quantity over quality.
Ys VII is by far the best choice.

Seven is mediocre though

>Wait, Bloodstained is longer?
Nah. 100%it took me 10 hours.

Bloodstained has mediocre performance on the base PS4. It's not Switch bad but still pretty shitty.

Ys VIII is an amazing game, Bloodstained is mediocre

that’s a shame, I guess I’ll go with Ys and maybe some other game like Wargroove or Fell Seal

Bloodstained is fantastic but Ys 8 is unironically a top 10 game of the generation. It's the Ys game I've been waiting to play for like 15 years

Haven't played Bloodstained due to my lack of interest in Igavanias, but Ys 8 was a disappointment for me. They fixed a few minor to moderate problems with this gameplay style but all the outstanding ones are still there. Flash guarding making every attack the same attack, unbelievably spongey boss fights if you do anything besides run into attacks hitting R1 and then spam skills. They added a few bizarrely half-finished feeling features like point defense missions where you just kinda chop away at weak enemies for five minutes while random effects and explosions you have little if any direct control over happen. Also there's far too much dialogue considering the complexity and quality of the story, especially for the first half where the only concrete story is "you're shipwrecked, build a base and explore I guess, watch out for dinosaurs". It has fantastic music (like the rest of the franchise) and has a nice sense of adventure when characters aren't fucking talking but I was so sick of the game by the end.

That’s awfully similar to my experience with Celceta and Seven

I agree with pretty much all of your complaints. It also seemed like a lot of the bosses lacked much attack variety, so you end up just dodging/guarding the same 2-3 heavily-telegraphed attacks over and over while chipping away at their health.

Honestly I think I liked Seven more just because it's shorter. Which is probably retarded but it's easier for me to take 20~ hours of flawed combat with little variety vs. 50~ hours of flawed combat with slightly more variety. 8 does add more variety, most notably more vertical level design thanks to the re-introduction of jumping and it doesn't do the thing where the game kinda does a soft reboot at the halfway mark. But its not enough to make the 30 hours difference for me.

Played Ys for about 8 hours, got bored running around a desert island with basically no story. Uninstalled. No regrets.

I played the demo for a bit and I really welcomed the return of the jumping, I mssed it in Seven / 4, how’s the level design and overall challenge?

Seeing a lot of shit opinions in this thread, Bloodstained was pretty damn good.

>people suggesting ys over Bloodstained

It's an undeniable fact that this forum has the worst taste in games. Being a subhuman neet with autism must interfere with taste in good video games.

Both

>level design

Probably the best in the series actually, I don't think the franchise had particularly strong level design before but the island is fun to explore. There's enough chests scattered around to make poking around feel rewarding. Like the Napishtim Engine games, the simple platforming in dungeons helps a lot to keep some variety in between clubbing mobs of enemies.

>overall challenge?

Like Seven and Celceta. Awkward because lower difficulties are a joke while enemies/bosses on higher difficulties basically two shot your current character while taking an obscene amount of punishment, but healing items/flash guard more than compensate for it. Out of the five difficulties, the first four are like Celceta you can carry enough healing items to just faceroll through everything if you really want. The highest difficulty imposes some limits on healing items but I don't know how much good they do since I only played on second highest. Flash guard probably still works.

What’s good taste in this case? Bloodstained or Ys?

Lacrimosa of Dana is just overall the better game and the island is also larger than Bloodstained's castle.

Bloodstained was fucking good.

good or just ok-ish? be honest

I would say definitely say good, but I'm already a fan of Castlevania, so I'm can't really be totally objective.
