Yeah, you definitely can't approach shotgun or laser without cover. I think the most likely thing is to hope for a teammate to aggro them so you can approach for free, or else camp a building and hope they walk near. They're both light armored though, so you could shut them down with dragoon-roll spam. It's not guaranteed to avoid damage, but laser and shotgun aren't as undodgeable as they look. Flamethrower is less threatening, almost all the heavy armored ayys look like food once you figure out that they have a really long windup to their weapons, and you can reset that windup by giving them a flinch. Flamethrower is only really scary because he blinds you.

I lamented all the lost boxes on single player, but in multiplayer, I let my buddy pilot the big robot, and I drove around on my free bike picking up loot. That bike is great.
