yeah it looks like multiple IP addresses that my ISP happens to use are all blocked...I don't get it, if this is targeted at me specifically, why? What did I do to warrant rangebanning without warning? Is it really because of these threads or what?

SMB3 project is my attempt at making "a whole game" worth of levels in the SMB3 theme. The levels are very traditional, something that might have fit in the original game!

The levels are pretty short and easy so far, there's a few difficulty spikes on some levels but would still be considered very easy for Yea Forums standards. There are optional hidden red coins in the levels that drastically increase the difficulty if you're going for them!

I always try to hold back with difficulty and put a lot of time into making the stages consistent.
Generally, harder stages also get boo'd more often/liked less often too since most people just like when they win.
On top of that, my friends who test are scrubs in Mario.
I want to make difficult stages, but i'm just really careful with it

A little too generous with mushrooms, but that could just be my challenge preference
1UPs could be better hidden and/or harder to get, by the 3rd tree it felt like you were giving them away
Lastly it's good to introduce mechanics in a relaxed way and you did that with the first cavern, but it might be better to have just one enemy or a pit or something, i.e. not a real challenge but just to have SOMETHING there so that the player feels like there is a chance of failing (no matter how small)

My attempt at a classic-style ghost house with a secret exit. Someone commented on this level and said that it was easy to get softlocked. I can't find the softlock, though, and I tested pretty extensively to avoid them. If that user's here, would you mind telling me where you got softlocked so I can fix it? Otherwise, can anyone else find it?

I found a soft lock.
Below the red cannon somewhere above the start there's a note block.
If you jump on it from the right side then it's possible to get stuck in the cranny to the left of it.

I like all of the alternate paths but the part where you have to platform on bloopers with cannons is terrible. They're inconsistent and you can't see whats above you.
I don't know if it is the only path but i gave up there after a lot of tries

How do you keep track? I play other anons levels, but I don't announce it that often.

Bit Crusade 3 is an adventure series of Mario levels that play in the traditional sense (scaling difficulty, hidden rooms and level theming). So if you like traditional Mario stages you’ll probably like these. The “game” will eventually utilize all 5 styles so there’s a little something for everyone. Every stage has five red coins hidden within that unlock a super bonus room at the end.

You were right at the end, man. Yeah, at first I worried they'd be too janky, but I found that you just need to stay on either the left or right side while riding the cannon and they'll go in the direction you want. I figured it'd be fair since I also added a checkpoint right before the homestretch sequence. Also, if you're having trouble, make sure to take the opportunity to get a spiny/buzzy helmet at the beginning.

Nope, not at all mandatory. Just a way to give players an extra hit while keeping mario small. Have you found the secret exit, by the way?

I like the nonlinearity of this one, it goes really well with the propeller hat.
The sub area is way easier and shorter than the main route. Especially the later parts of the main route where the platform goes left and right and takes ages. So they could be better balanced I think.

Thought it was fun, only input I have is that I noticed a few naked pipes plus one of the propeller shrooms likes to fly off leaving a slow Mario to dry. Seems like you usually gave players an alternative but if the propeller is mandatory I recommend giving them to the player using a pipe instead of a question block.

Thanks for the advice. I really like to make my levels non linear, and I think the propeller hat helped a lot in aiding that. Your criticism about path balance is spot on though imo. I always have problems making the subworld path equal in distance/difficulty to the main world. I either end up making the main world the easy/short path or the sub world the easy/short path. I will definitely try to work on balancing that more.

Yeah, I was debating doing a power up pipe in the beginning, and in retrospect I should have went that way. I made the main route possible without the propeller hat (and put a power up pipe in the sub area that required it), but for a level trying to focus on the power up, I should have went with a pipe instead. On the supposed naked pipes, I always tried to have a sideways pipe come from a different pipe. That probably wasn't the best aesthetic approach, but that was my mindset in doing it.

I never played SMM1 so I'm still getting a feel for what people enjoy and what's they don't. The 2nd area is much better I agree, I think I'm going to expand on the idea of leaving/returning to yoshi since I liked that too.

Unfortunately SMM2 doesn't give you a lot of ways to place pipes without them looking weird. If I have to place a pipe in mid-air or something I just go with how SMB3 did it, which is a bunch of hard blocks around it.

Hopefully they can give us better looking split pipes in the future, even SMB1 had them.

Problem is that Nintendo doesn't want to implement game-specific enemies apart from SM3DW. Recently played through SMB3 again for some inspiration and the amount of things in that game you can't use in SMM2 is just painful. If you tried to remake that game in SMM2 it would cripple almost every level.

Pretty strange how they focus so much on rare features like the Kuribo Shoe and Angry Sun but leave out common enemies like Boomerang Bros. and mimic blocks.

I think the philosophy is that style specific elements are ok if they have an appropriate counterpart in the other styles.
If you switch styles, the Kuribo shoes just turn into Yoshi Eggs, Feathers turn into Propeller Shrooms, etc.
But yes, some certain enemies are pretty strange, like the sun

Even the Angry Sun doesn't feel right. It was a lot harder to avoid in SMB3 since the game was in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Why is it so important to them that they retain comparability between styles? Does anybody really spend hours making a SMW style level and then decide to just change it to SMB style before release? It's not like they're perfectly compatible anyways. SMB has slopes yeah, but you can't slide on them, or hold items.

This. I would rather every style be robust. They could just say "some assets won't carry over". I like that they add new stuff to old styles but why does it have to rob us of other assets that are important to the original games? You can't throw items up in any style but SMW and that breaks a ton of levels. They already aren't totally consistent so they should just try their best to make it match, but not really care when they don't.

You definitely get them for likes and lose them for boos. I'm not entirely sure how plays, comments and skips factor in but I think those will impact your points as well.

There was no sign for a player to stop moving after entering the door to ready for the snowboard, so here’s a rough design that prevents the player from moving until they’re on a shell (forgive the quality). Both blasters fire, one hits the on/off switch , the other springs up and catches Mario.

What I meant with guiding the player is pretty simple, just make sure they know where to go. Coins are the best way of this. With the claws, it was hard to find the ones in the later sections. Plus, they were pretty awkward to use with the block holding them.

the average player only runs into random levels on Endless and Multiplayer. Nobody except the difficulty algorithm cares about your clear rate.

That being said, Easy Endless gets played way more than the others. So if you want to farm Maker points, aim for something brainless that you could damage-boost from start to finish.

Clear rate doesn't affect my view of a level. I assume 99% of people are complete shitters who die 10 times on the first goomba in world 1-1.

Clear rate can also be dumped hard by WR attempts. Doesn't really affect its difficulty rating though, even if someone ran WRs like crazy and your stage is at 3% clear rate cause of it the stage would still be classified as "Easy" if it was seen as Easy before.

Only once and I don't how or why it happened. It had about 1:3 like to play ratio with 28% clear rate. It was a long level too.

My other levels had similar like to play ratios too, so I don't know why this one in particular was made popular.

Good news - I agree with you. I decided to go back and revamp the end area to be more forgiving and to have the sequence leading up to the steps feel less random. Gonna do a clear check and reupload the course.

Fun course, really solid use of wind which I usually hate. That magikoopa pipe was annoying though.

Good course, visuals in particular stood out (the face in beginning cracked me up). The challenges were a little plain for me, but will probably do really well with general player population. You did a great job sticking to a theme though which I really liked, I just wish the challenges built on themselves in a more meaningful way.

I'm the guy that's been doing DKC2 remakes. I actually have an original this time. It's the first course I ever started working on so it's a bit rough around the edges but I only just finished it. It's a lava castle theme that is pretty straightforward with some little branching paths and a optional yoshi save.

I don't care what it is, it's a fucking thwomp from offscreen without any warning or indication that it's there, and that shit is gay as fuck. I didn't boo it but if I came across it in endless I definitely would have.

I don't know how exactly you'd fix this but in the pow block trial, you can softlock if you go in the pipe you throw a shell into in order to set everything off. Fun and well-made little stage otherwise, though!

Thanks for the info. as for what i changed, the powblock section used to be a starman section, cat mario had some difficult wall climbing with lava and the hammer section had conveyor belts in the mid section and the very bottom was just throw boxes to get across.
