Actually yes, you do need to meet some standards. When you discriminate anything you recognize some qualities in it that make it distinct from another thing. If you're a musician you probably have to be able to play at least one instrument and be able to make music. If you're a driver you need to be able to drive a car. If you're a gamer you need to have a basic understanding of different genres, platforms, be able to pick up a controller and jump into a game. 90% of of "girl gamers" (as the media describes them) couldn't do a single one of these, because the extent of their "gaming" is playing candy crush on their iPhone.

Because games journos are all far left identitarians and to them there is no such thing as an individual, a person is defined by the groups they belong to. People here like to blame it all on Big Bang Theory, but that was a symptom, not the cause. The boring truth is that more and more people played casual video games and it eventually just reached the point where enough people played that it was mainstream. Modern Warfare 1 sold 17 million, 2 sold 25 million and 3 sold 30 million. Those kinds of numbers get people noticing things.

Everybody has their own metric for what a real gamer is. I own 100 games, have finished around 300 games (going to need to correct some errors in my Grouvee), and hit the arcade every weekend for shmups and bemani. I know I am a gamer. To me.

But because I don't platinum every game or play competitive multiplayer most people (and Yea Forums included) would say I am not a gamer. Another camp says any game that is not raw competition isn't actually a game at all, its a toy.
