ESA comes off as the type of situation where you can meet runners you like easily and play shit with them/hang out in the practice rooms or other game rooms

GDQ seems like most runners show up for just their run and otherwise stay away from the venue/just hang out offsite with their discord nuthuggers. i almost never see runners i recognize in the audience. i also don't think they let non-runners into the practice room at GDQ, but there is an arcade (might be pay to play tho)

if you just want to watch runs then GDQ is probably fun, but if you want to actually meet and hang out with people ESA seems much better

Can confirm this, when I visited Närcon in Sweden many years ago it was really welcoming and Swedes are the friendliest bunch on this planet easily, even a introvert nerd like me got to talk with lots of strangers, take part in fun contests and stuff whereas cons in my country are full of people who just keep it to themselves and just have group mentality big time.
So I can imagine like Närcon, ESA is very open and it's easy to talk to people there and being awkward with nationalities is just good opener, whereas GDQ is probably complete opposite as has been said, not that I know for sure.

What went wrong is that Mirrored and Cosmo didn't set out how they wanted commentary to go, and Mirrored talked more than Cosmo wanted him to. It just blew up because it was really awkward for the runner to tell someone to not talk as much. It was basically the 2013 Chibi/Caveman.

This is revisionist history, just so everyone knows. One, it was wind waker that they were both running at the time. Two, Mirrored didn't have an "insane following", particularly compared to Cosmo, and didn't know more about the game then Cosmo. Cosmo was a record holder and Mirrored would watch his runs on stream and take notes on them.

One big thing when comparing years is that a lot of it gets simplified to just "which runs were good," when marathons have so much more. You miss out on all the stuff between the runs like the hosts being awkward filling air, music, ads (AID, HUH), and setup times. Every run taking 20 minutes to start with shitty music and ads playing doesn't mean shit when looking at VODs but the people watching it live are going to dislike the year more than latecomers because of it. There's also the stuff in threads on Yea Forums. Remember the comfy spam during Harry Potter in '17? Remember when Chad dropped by the thread?
