Does it hold up after 17 years?

Does it hold up after 17 years?

Also, why is it so beloved by speedrunners?

Played it for the first time 2 months ago. It's the best Mario after 64.

t. Still haven't played Odyssey

I played it for the first time this year. I'd played every other Mario game but 3D World, but always kind of ignored Sunshine. Sunshine has its issues, but it's great.
Odyssey is great, too.

I find it a hell of a lot more enjoyable than the Galaxy games to be quite honest with you.

comfy game

Yes; especially when you compare it to A Hat in Time.
Mario is the standard setter for platformers and will continue to be. Nintendo makes sure every Mario game is perfect before shipping it out.

I like it. It feels like I'm on an island vacation. I'll never be able to afford a real island vacation

Galaxy is better
But if you like Sunshine more that's okay and I respect your opinion.

It has great water

Been playing Mario 64 again, it has aged noticably.

Feels like playing a flying simulator with the shitty fucking controls but otherwise I like it

it holds up worse than 64 due to the camera managing to be even shitter somehow.

the only people who say this are shit at the game.

Basically every game pre-2010 is irreparably fucked because of the camera, and Sunshine is no exception. Besides a few gnarly sections, it's still a great game and in my top 3 Marios.
the water shader still looks good

All the 3D games are good (Except 64 DS which is an abomination but that doesn't really count). Even 3D World is decent and mostly just gets shit on because all the other ones make attempts to be different while 3D World is essentially just New Soup with a Z axis.

I honestly think 64 is the worst just because some maps do not remotely hold up today and constantly restarting a level with ever star collected is annoying.
Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are possibly the best platforming games ever made so it's not much of a contest.

I hate how the Galaxy games rail roads you super hard for every star.
They throw you into a new stage and 80% is locked from you and follow the straight line to the goal in those game and it's shitty.

>the only people who like the game are autistically good at it
that's a pretty sorry state

AHiT shits all over Sunshine and Odyssey.

It does, even if the camera sometimes doesn't. Just expect more challenge than usual from a Mario game, and power through it.

>I hate how the Galaxy games rail roads you super hard for every star.
Well yeah, that's how the entire game is designed. While I understand why some people prefer the open world Mario games I and many people love Galaxy so much because how refined the platforming is.

There is no space wasted, each world is comprised of the good shit.

What kind of person has trouble playing Mario games?

The people who started playing Mario with both Galaxy

>there is no space wasted.
I feel cutting you off of most of the stage shown for every individual star is some pretty wasted space.

Galaxy had some decently hard levels though, especially if you were trying to go for 100% or do Comets.

The only distinctly hard part of 64 was Rainbow Ride and that level is objectively trash.

I just replayed it 100% a couple weeks ago.

pros:
>by far the best overworld
>every level oozing with soul
>super unique and odd missions
>very smooth, tight controls
>FLUDD genuinely makes the game more fun

cons:
>collecting all the blue coins can be a massive pain in some levels (Noki Bay ffs)
>blue coins also account for 24 shines, wasted potential
>no shortage of repetitive and pointless levels (think some of the hidden levels in the plaza, repeated boss fights)
>somewhat glitchy and actually gets in the way of gameplay sometimes

that's all I can think of. the game has some very mediocre missions, but it has a lot of good missions too. when the missions are good, they are actually amazing. finding the 8 red coins in the hotel in Sirena Beach is one of the most fun parts of the game. missions like that are where the game really shines
