Ness seemed to be for all intents and purposes replaced with Lucas, even stating "Ness has appeared until now."
That did not come to pass. In fact Lucas was cut in Smash 4 with Ness taking priority
Captain Falcon seemed uncertain as well and wasn't revealed until close to release. In Smash 4 he took the spotlight in a character reveal trailer that wasn't even his.
Jigglypuff was also considered for a cut but that didn't happen either

The time for those cuts has long passed and now all these characters are mainstays. Sakurai has not reconsidered any of these decisions since Brawl.

Sakurai is incredibly dedicated to Smash Bros which is why he keeps coming back even if he says he's not going to. I don't think it's farfetched that him coming back again is a safe bet. Even if he's not a director he'll probably want to be a producer or an advisor so he'll still have input. Aside from that, Smash 6 will either be built off Ultimate so that nobody has to be cut and the characters can just be ported, OR if characters DO get cut in a hypothetical reboot they will follow Sakurai's criteria of uniqueness, NOT relevance.

my bet is on the former, the next game should be a deluxe port so they don't have to work on the veterans and focus on new modes and several new characters, this is much more practical from a business standpoint than cutfags would care to admit.

I completely agree. Instead of a reboot they should focus on refining what they have right now. Starting over again is antithetical to progress.

I think there could be a few cuts for the next Smash, but Sakurai isn't about to go cutting the roster in half like you guys believe.
Something I could see happening is that Incineroar gets replaced with Scorbunny's final evolution.
Or one of the Fire Emblem characters gets replaced with one from Three Houses.
Some of the characters that feel too similar to another without being Echo's might go as well, mainly Toon Link and Young Link.

Third parties are a different story.
Banjo could be lost if Phil is no longer in charge of Xbox.
Bayo should stay for as long as Nintendo has some hand in her series.
Cloud and DQ Hero might get lost, depends on how generous Square is feeling. We might get both, 1 or neither.
Ryu, Ken, Pac-Man, Megaman, Sonic, Simon, Richter and Snake are all pretty certain.
Joker is an odd case, nothing really ties him to Nintendo and I don't think his character has the staying power to make it to Smash 6.
I could see him being cut but possibly replaced with a different ATLUS rep.

What if Pit canibalized Joker’s persona gimmick somewhat in that he now has Palutena behind him aiding him in battle, except she’s not nearly as strong as arsene and she’s out all the time.

They could also have Dark Pit in still and have palutena be replaced with Viridi. This way we actually get 4 KI characters in while all relying on a single moveset.

People that cut starfox characters generally dont seem to understand they all play different enough for Sakurai to bring them back each time. It'd make no sense for them to cut Falco at this point and Wolf's popular if not for just being good.
