What was memorable from this gen? All I can think of are disappointments (kingdom hearts 3, dynasty warriors 9, ff15) and lack of new IPs

Batman arkham asylum the best super heroe game, with a combat sistem that inspired many others, Bioshock is a great original game wich none of the games today come close to be interesting as him and Assassin's creed one of the most successful franchises, the second one is great. Its not just you. This generation is practically the remaster/reboot/remake/re-imagining/re-release generation. A lot of IPs are just continuations from the past. There's barely any innovation and monetization has become worse than the past generation.
It actually peaked around 2008, 2009, 2010. We didn't appreciate how good we had it until we lost it.
Pretty much this. Hindsight is always 20/20. We used to call a lot of games 'average' at that time. But, now, those 'average' games look great compared to current standards.

If you were into handhelds, sure. The only way this gen is worse is Western development going up its own virtue signaling ass and the proliferation of MTX. 7th gen was absolutely dire for Japanese home console output.

honestly it can only get worse OP. I mean, the bigger the hardware the bigger the devs want to make games. I agree that open world games are fun but the fact that they have started to dominate the AAA market is ridiculous. I honestly don't have time to play multiple open world career games.

I was a Wii60 fag last gen was great until 2011, then video games all kind of sucked until 2017
I dont want to say I'll "never" get a next gen console. I said I'd "never" get a Sega Saturn but 15 years or so after launch I fell in love with it. But it's certainly not in my immediate plans. The types of games that are popular today dont appeal to me at all, the shady industry monetization practices are put of control, I've always been for physical media but games need so many patches and DLC today what's on that disc really? This is the first time I've considered just sitting the whole thing out.

There hasn't been a good gen since Gen6. You've got a couple standouts in each gen after, but the overall feeling is just awful. 6, 5, and 4 all felt like golden ages. 3 after the Crash started the golden age, and it ended when DLC/microtransactions and half-finished games sold at full price became common.
Video games have sucked in general for a very long time. There are a handful of decent to good games and a couple great ones, but they’re surrounded by a sea of garbage. Annualized franchises, budgets larger than films, most games are shooters, most games are online multiplayer-focused, most games are incomplete and charge you extra to complete them or for extras to help you out, etc etc. What was once an industry dominated by Japanese creativity gave way to mostly boring and lazy Western games born out of the PC gaming model. Too many shooters and Western RPGs. Too much online multiplayer focus. Almost all of the middle tier and bottom tier publishers disappeared and were replaced by indies. Indies are 95% garbage. The rest is AAA conforming to the above models. Nintendo is an outlier but a lot of their Switch titles are Wii U ports or outsourced development because they take so long to make modern games. The only good news for me is my backlog is full of enough to keep me busy for a long time. That and old favs is probably all I’ll ever need
