The fuck was up with this shit. Here we have a game that purports to have a flexible story you can make big decisions in, yet instead of being given the option of either getting a reward now or a delayed reward in the form of your friend coming back in the ending to help you, the game completely abandons the concept and makes the first of these options in every way superior.
