On the contrary, I was a bit peeved about Pearl and Marina in 2 at first. It felt like they were just replacing Callie and Marie instead of doing something new, and I think I'd appreciate some strange Splatoon robot as the announcer given how good the designs of this series are.

Looking for some ability recommendations

I'm making a Swim speed up gear, and after going through the charts showing the diminishing returns of Swim Speed Up, I've determined that having 1 main + 2 subs is all that's needed to be v speedy (especially using a lightweight class).

But that leaves me with 1 extra gear slot (maybe 2 if I only add 1 sub of swim speed). So I'm wondering what abilities are useful to have only 1 or 2 subs of? Obviously, having an ability in any stat is better than having no ability in that stat, but I'm sure there are some abilities that benefit more than others.

Like, perhaps having more of one ability is more redundant than multiple copies of another ability. Or perhaps there is an ability where all you need is one sub worth in order to reap a good amount of gains.

That's the kind of thing I'm looking for. If anyone has any recommendations, that'd be swell.

Maybe ink recovery, since recovery speed increases by 3% with one sub according to loadout.ink. Not sure how updated it is considering it doesn't have bomb defense up dx, though.
I'm personally a fan of quick super jump since even one main of it cuts down a notable amount of super jump time, but I'm not sure how much one sub will realistically help you.

What weapons do you use? What's your playstyle like?

That's fair, but I'm not really wasting any time by doing this. I'm not farming for chunks or shit like that. I order cool gear I see others wear. So I'm able to get 1 main +1 sub, or sometimes I've been lucky and got 1 main + 2 subs identical on some gear.

That in conjunction with the 20 free chunks Splatoon has been giving us for most abilities from the News page, makes this a low effort venture for me.

Right now I've moved to the NZap and I'm really enjoying that. But before than I mainly used Splat Dualies, and occasionally use the bloblobber when I wanted to really mix things up or if the map rotation didn't suit my other weapons.

But right now, most of my time is spent with the NZap

And my playstyle is how each weapon "should" be played. So for NZap and Dualies I'm more front line and flanking, more aggressive. And Bloblobber I play a mix of backline + pusher.

Last time I heard, a lot of people like to use run speed with the n-zap for maximum speediness, so that's worth looking into.
I also know a lot of people like to run 1 or 2 subs of ink resist or bomb defense. Not sure why, never looked into it. But worth a shot if you have a couple extra sub slots.

Don't know about others but the way dodging is is more or less why I don't main dualies anymore. The hit detection often makes it so you can't dodge on reaction, you get hit anyway, so you'd need to preemptively dodge, but since most people expect the dodge it's not always easy.

Also I make splatoon threads all the time but I've not played the game in over a year cos I got really bored of playing it. For me, inklings transcend the game they are stuck in and will forever change the world of shota and loli for the better.
Finally, many splatoon players are looking forward to animal crossing. The fanbases of both games overlap a lot, stop trying to divide them and start some kind of dumb flamewar. May I remind you that animal crossing was delayed by a large amount because of work being put into splatoon 2 instead. Are AC fans angry about this? No.

Missiles are too honest of a special when they are used strategically instead of spammed en masse (which is a shit strat and there are much better missile spam guns anyway), while Stingray is by far the most fundamentally broken special in both games. It's a case of both kits having great synergy but one of them having better components.

Honestly I like using missiles as a tracking tool. That aspect of them is almost more useful than the disruption element.

It takes some practice, map knowledge and timing to use. Once you tagged the enemy with the ray you can open the map and see what they are doing. By then a good stingray is guranteed to get a splat.

As an ACfag who has nothing but respect for the splatoon series, I dont want some sort of animosity between us just because the studio that made splatoon is now directing their attention to another title.

The combination of two is how you get the most effect out of missiles. One of the cool things about them is that people spread out when you shoot missiles at them to not get hit by rockets aimed at their teammate, so you are baisically forcing the enemy to either back off or fight a 1v1 at information disadvantage and with no escape route.
Your teammates can see the targeting circles too by the way, just not as big crosshairs but rather as thin circles on the ground, even through walls.

I personally don't care because Nogami is an absolute god either way. Good luck to you folk

As a Splatoonfag, I have no problems with the studio directing their attention to another title, but I do have problems with them slaving off on Animal fucking Crossing. If they were tasked with something else like reviving some old and buried Nintendo franchise with their magic or even doing another new IP I'd be completely fine, but AC is a dead end with no room for any sort of creative gameplay and their talent is wasted on something as primitive as it.

Definitely. I feel like missiles are underrated because people go "oh they don't get kills" and neglect how useful they can be in other ways. I love to check where people are on the map, get them to stop what they're doing, and then soften the enemy for a push using them.

The only problem is that they are a good special in a land of broken specials. You could shoot off missiles to help you go fuck up a mofo, or you can just whip out stingray and fuck that mofo right here and now with your long n thick and have both higher success rate and zero risk of retaliation on top of not being limited by, well, anything.

Use one sub for Bomb Defense DX (reduce 20% sensors duration and you can survive 2 splash damage shots from the Jetpack) or Special Charge Up

All you need to do is slap on an N-Zap and some armor, and you're invincible.

Is there any hope of the 5.0 update letting the clash blaster turf more ground with main power up?

Yes, booyah bomb seems like a fresh take on the inkstrike. The super armor while launching definitely makes the bomb stronger. Honestly though, the inkzooka was way more annoying, especially with lag.

Splat1 specials, even the uber-broken shit like kraken and inkzooka, still had limitations, most notably they adhered to the main principle of the game- a buffer of your ink means safety. Zooker stretched the defenition of buffer by having front-loaded 7 lines of range, but it still wasn't infinite like Stingray that can kill you from spawn to spawn. And before you say Wail or Missiles, those aren't killing specials, they are zoning/pressure specials.
Booyah Bomb is baisically Inkstrike anyway, except it's also a panic button.

Remember when the first ink zooka was almost instant before the nerF? Boy That sure was fun...

Nah, it needs a complete revamp and not crutches to try to justify it over Octobrush. Get its blast size back down to reasonable levels, then make it accurate in the air, reduce the first shot buffer, reduce the endlag and buff its strafe speed. Make it an actually mobile blaster instead of just a bad one.

The thing is I'm actually ok with the clash in it current form. I just want it to turf better with main power up like main power up does for bloblobber

For anyone who can aim regular Blaster is a better choice by every concieveable metric, the only things Clash has over it are light weight and strafe speed, former can be patched with SSU and latter is still shit on Clash so it's irrevelant.

I mean, that webm is the typical "aim in all directions and hope for the best" behaviour of someone who relies too hard on Clash fixing their mistakes at cost of actual weapon performance. You even use Neo and not the vanilla.
There's nothing wrong with being bad and arguably even with remaining bad, but there are better weapons suitable for bad players than Clash- Octobrush, Tri-Slosher, Sloshing Machine, Splat Roller, the possibilities are endless. If you iinstead want to get better, pick up Tentatek and learn fundamentals of aiming, positioning and movement before branching out to other weapons.

Ever since they changed it so Splashdown gives fixed time frame to be shot down it caused some minor desyncs. While on your screen you got hit by splashdown and got your bomb rekt, on their screen they already splashed down when the bomb was thrown so it didn't get destroyed, and since it doesn't have to ask your side for a permission to die as most explosions are calculated defender-side they just die.

It's not a bug. It's a feature!

There are better fun options even with similar mechanics. A more mobile Clash would also be more fun, but also good enough for many more people to consider. A better-inking Clash wouldn't be any more fun, it'd just be marginally less shit.

Ngl, I'm feeling revitalized with Splatoon again. I stopped playing when Smash came out. Then Smash was the only thing I really played for hours and hours.

Went abroad for work for a little bit, and came back to a shitstorm in the Smash community. Got extremely disenfranchised when my fav player Ally retired after doing some v shady things and stopped playing my Switch all together.

I came back for the final fest, and I'm hooked again. Splatoon is such a great game, with such a better community, it's wonderful. I'm excited to build gear and splat some bros. I may even pick up Octo Expansion since it's supposed to be amazing.

I keep plateauing in S rank, however. I'll get in, stay for a brief while, then get booted back down and I have to rank up again. It's happened a few times. Obviously I just have to get better, but it seems that I'm missing something to allow me to be a mainstay in the rank.

Another thing I noticed was that you see nearly all abilities being used to some extent. Even if it's just one sub of something. Which is great because it means that (nearly) everything is useful.

Hell, a bunch of the top players just stack a fuck load of quick respawn. They don't even have any "aggressive" abilities. Meaning that you can pretty much use whatever loadout you like. Nothing is "optimal" and must be used like you often end up seeing in shooters.

As for my load out, I don't really "have" a specific load out, which may be my problem. I love leveling up my gear and unlocking the new abilities. So I always have at least one piece of gear that's completely empty to level up. Hell, just now I put on three empty pieces of gear just so I could level them up all together.

So that may be part of the problem, lol. I am making a swim speed up vest atm. 1 main 2 subs of swim speed up, then I'm debating on whether to cap it off with 1 sub of either Special charge Up, or bomb defense X.

As for my weapon, I have just switched to the Nzap85 after being a splat duelie main (with the occasional bloblobber for fun).

Yeah definitely. I think the abilities are too subtle to strictly matter. There's a lot of freedom to do whatever suits your playstyle. But people who are obsessed with the meta will find something to argue about anyway

Make sure not to rush in and die too quickly. Sticking around on the map is critical so you can shut down enemy pushes (usually possible with just a splat or two). Overextending will make you spend too much time in respawn

The big boy money bonuses are like 32k, so yeah. Even when money isn't the special prize of the rotation I think you can get 16k, and can get money boosters for the regular modes occasionally. Shit's literal cash.

You that's solid advice. I tend to get too impatient and aggro at times, especially when playing a front line/slayer weapon. I guess I feel that sticking around in one place will get you killed quickly.

Splatfests really aren't any different from business as usual minus the pageantry and closed ranked modes. Game's still plenty active, go wild. Also, Octo Expansion is vastly superior single player content compared to the in-box story mode. Consider buying it if you liked the single player stuff.

I don't know who did the sound design for the Splatoon characters, but they're a genius. They managed to make a sound that is recognizable as speech, yet isn't, that doesn't become annoying even after hearing it the 300th time.
