Planescape Torment
your life is irrelevant
Absolute truths are a form of fallacy
> he watches movies for the CGI effects
> he reads books for the grammar
Give a person a reason to do something or they won't do it.
Teen's first critical thought.
wrong
Actually, you just need a summary at most, so you aren't distracted by "The fuck is going on?".
Yeah, but what about your story, the story the player does?
is this the word salad autist posting again?
True. You do not need to know the story of paper scissors rock, thumb wars, or heads up seven up.
low quality bait thread, somehow even lower quality than a wojak or pepe thread.
Every game needs an interlude to the action or a break from continuous lines of similar gameplay, no matter how good it is.
There's an art to how much can interrupt gameplay without being too intrusive, but story is a good mechanism to put the gameplay into a perspective so you aren't mindlessly doing stuff like in a simulation.
Even games without a real story do this. Look at Mobas or really any multiplayer arena game. You have queues and champion/team selects to give you small enough gaps between sessions so you don't fry your brain.
It depends on the people. Aldo:
>comic sans
as i started getting into my way late teens i realized that story actually matters. maybe im just a boomer but a game almost needs a good story to be fun to me
Even 'To The Moon'?
This, and anyone who disagrees is a zoomer retard only watches games on twitch instead of actually playing them.
Gameplay > Music > Sound Design = Art Style > Characters > Story > Graphical Fidelity
That said, given two games with equal or near-equal gameplay that differ greatly on the other aspects, the one that is the greater total package definitely wins. It's just that Gameplay is king.
That'd be if he said Graphics are #1. Gameplay being #1 is watching movies for the acting and reading books for the prose.
the medium that focuses on acting is theater, movies are for its editing and framing shots as the unique feature of the medium
You're right, I should've said cinematography.
based
Only a Sith deals in absolutes
what about rpgs you fucktard
Not if the gameplay revolves around the story.
Retard
but if the movie has bad acting its a bad movie
if the game has a shit story its a bad game
theres not a single good game with a bad story as theres not a single good movie with bad acting
Story, no matter how loose, can add more emotion to the gameplay and the triumphs the main character achieves also feel like your own.
Halo 2's story is one of my favorite parts about playing that campaign.
>theres not a single good game with a bad story
Flight simulators and pinballs.
No story=/=Bad story
videogame stories should only exist to serve the gameplay, not the other way around
Nah. If a game doesn't have some kind of story then I have no motivation to see it through. It doesn't have to be amazing but I want to have some kind of reason to be on a adventure.
Only exception is when it's some casual time killer like Animal Crossing
>theres not a single good movie with bad acting
Tons of action movies with plots and characters and such have mediocre-to-terrible acting but still accomplish what they're going for with their cinematography & choreography.
hot garbage thread.
>if the game has a shit story its a bad game
No it isn't.
I only play story-driven games. kys zoomer
Thanks for bumping this shitty bait thread.
False, but I want to read your reasoning first.
>theres not a single good movie with bad acting
gran torino
Then there is no point in playing video games, just watch a let's play on youtube
a bit based but bluepilled
I can probably count the number of video games with stories worth taking seriously on one hand, but that doesn't mean I think video games are shit
been playing Outer Wilds recently. it would be pretty damn hard to experience it without the story
No, you autist multiplayer faggot
Why people playing games for the story triggers you so hard?
stupid meaning, ugly font
0/10
>Music above Sound Design
nani the fuck?
Isn't that in and of itself an absolute?
It's not irrelevant, but no game requires a story that can't be easily summarized in a short paragraph. That is to say, establish the conflict, journey goal and resolution, then get to it. Anything beyond that is window dressing.
I mean if you don't care for the story in video games and that isn't important to you that's an acceptable opinion to have. Hell, even criticizing a specific game for having an irrelevant story would be fine since that's constructive.
This is just being a petulant child and saying "stop liking things I don't like." How immature do you have to be to put yourself on a pedestal and say "How dare you peasants disagree with what I, king of all taste and opinions, have to say" in such pointless, vague, and uncritical terms. Even if you want to be an asshole like that you have to at least prove that you have some authority on the topic.
Is Bloodborne's story window dressing?
For fuck's sake, it's literally written in a meme font.
Stop taking shitty baits like these seriously.
"story" does not equal "plot"
a game without a story doesn't exist. video games are inherently narrativist.
You don't know the meaning of the word "irrelevant".
Even shitty bait is a chance for productive discourse. Besides that whether or not it's bait is pretty moot when people actually hold opinions like that.
Then again why are you taking me seriously either. This could just as easily be shitty bait right? Not much of a point calling it out when you can't prove how sincere or insincere anyone is being.
Stories in games are there to give you an incentive to do shit. Obviously exceptions apply, like Heavy Rain or a lot of RPGs.
yes and no
chess has no written story, but there is a narrative in the gameplay—attacks, counterattacks, bluffs, threats. the story is there, but not overt
the question really is what is meant by “relevant”
if you mean relevant to gameplay, then arguably no. if you mean relevant to quality, then yes.
then there are narrative games (visual novels and walking sims) that are a creative vehicle for story alone.
i do think a game with great gameplay and a shit story is better than the opposite
