I think Nintendo, the only other major handheld manufacturer at the time, is just slightly behind the time

>discs in a handheld
it was behind it's time

it looks really really uncomfortable to play on

the pspgo was entirely digital

Yes
It's not. Got one recently

Is it worth getting one today? Want to run emus on it but I am cautious because I don't trust the quality of the battery and I heard you can only use Sonys proprietary storage cards

>replies and literally doesn't even know what it is

I'd just get a 3DS or a Switch if you want to run PS1 games. PS1 games on a PSP kind of suck

Was too damn expensive

It was overpriced, and the digital store was underwhelming.

16GB is honestly enough if you don't go wild. Emus aren't perfect but they are usually "fine".

Here's your Playstation Switch, bro.

No because there’s literally no reason to remove physical media and game options from your VIDEO GAME CONSOLE

>back then everyone was pissed that it was digital only
>now more and more people are ok with digital because muh convenience
funny how times change

Get a vita (1000 if you want OLED, 2000 for better battery + micro USB), and the L2 R2 case. Anything a psp could do, the vita can do with better specs and a slight overclock if you want.

Usually digital-only consoles are cheaper than those with physical support, not more expensive.

Usually they also have
>easily & cheaply expandable memory
>a digital store which has all the games
>a digital store which has good prices

It was but it also foreshadowed the PS Vita with its shitty proprietary memory cards

Many of us upgraded our internet since then.

Don't listen to desperate vita fags trying to shill their console. There's nothing on Vita worth playing that you cant play elsewhere. Get a PSP 3000 or Go. Don't know what that one fag who says PSP plays PS1 "fine." It runs it natively. You can emulate pretty much anything up to N64 well.

PSP emulates PS1 bro, that's why crash team racing and other games run much worse than on real hardware. just because it's official doesn't mean it's native.

honestly why get an oled model nowadays. There's a plugin that improves the vita 2000 screen significantly. For some reason sony cucked some setting.

I unironically loved my go. Sure it had its flaws but it was real comfy

>go
no, post the real psp.

Internet was a lot more shittier at the time, as were prices for storage.

PSP runs PS1 code mostly natively and emulates some of it. Is your PSP underclocked or something? CTR runs fine.

To be precise, the technique used is dynamic recompilation. That is it recompiles PS1 code into PSP code at runtime then executes it directly. By all accounts this is is emulation, every emulator that is at all demanding (dolphin, pcsx2) uses this technique.

CTR drops frames way more often than on real hardware, and that's just in single player. While beating the oxide ghosts I saw it dipping as low as 20fps at times. Multiplayer on a PSTV is worse, that never hits 30fps. Wipeout 2097 is another example of a game that runs much worse than on real hardware, basically never hitting its framerate target.

at some point Sony underclocked the PSP from 333MHz to 222MHz in an attempt to improve battery life
install CFW on it, change the clock speed to 333MHz in the VSH menu and it will run much smoother

I only ever use CFW, I doublechecked the clockspeeds using cwcheat, I'm not underclocked.
Also, PS1 games only ever ran at 333MHz even on stock PSPs.

what are you on about? 3ds PSX looks awful

It’s really the perfect size for a handheld. The Vita is too fucking huge.

It’s a great option for playing PS1 games if you have a DS3 and a CRT with component support. If you actually want PSP games on the big screen, get a PSTV since PSPs letterbox their PSP TV out with the assumption that you’re playing on a 4:3 screen.

If you want to play PSP games on the go, a Vita or the MHP3rd PSP if you want to be a purist are your best options.

So this is the intelligence of the nu-gamer, whoa.

>If you actually want PSP games on the big screen, get a PSTV since PSPs letterbox their PSP TV out with the assumption that you’re playing on a 4:3 screen.
That's not exactly true actually. Playing PSP games with TV out windowboxes the 480x272 viewport in a 640(?)x480 frame. So I believe this is done to avoid scaling rather than to correct the aspect ratio.

On the other hand, playing PS1 games on a PSP using TV out renders them in native resolution, including proper switching between 240p and 480i when transitioning between menus and such. I'm not actually sure if nonsquare pixels are properly handled but it's otherwise pretty cool and surprisingly accurate.
