World makes the previous MH games feel a little stiffer in terms of controls. However, only two things you need to worry about GU. The amount of recolored monsters, and the boring as fuck gathering quests

It's fun, although World will have probably instilled some bad habits in you for that game. I'd say it's worth picking up for the roster alone, even with Iceborne's additions it's probably only going to be around half the size of GU's and there are a lot of monsters in it that probably aren't going to be coming back for a while, if ever.

It was badly implemented in 3/3U, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea and should be entirely scrapped forever. The main problem with it was 3’s fucking awful camera where you were locked to quantized height levels and angles, which was fixed a long time ago. If they did swimming again, it would be much better.

Because everybody's realising that it was a good concept, just poorly executed, and that without it several monsters are either gimped at best or can't ever be in a game again at worst.

The only thing I can imagine holding it back is there's no zone for it. If they wanted to, the skeleton and model should have been done long ago after that pre-release video featuring a turf war between it and Anjanath.

I was sick of fighting Rath in MHF.

Why not do flying combat? 90% of monsters can already fly and its a new idea. You can even implement petting monsters to fly on their backs

Sure, why not. Swing like Spiderman and hookshot around like Link. I also want mount attacks to work like Dragon’s Dogma or SotC instead of what we have now.

The air isn't an interesting environment and aerial combat trivializes too many fights. This is why insect glaive has shit aerial damage. You can do a lot more with the structure of underwater environments, while expanding on existing areas like coastlines or rivers. My favorite thing about underwater in 3 was the murky jungle rivers. Even when you're not in the water, it makes the environments feel much larger and more natural. With World's emphasis on that aspect, and the improved mobility all around, they could really do a lot with the concept. Just have some grapple bug equivalent at points underwater.

An entire biome of monsters are locked behind the concept, so people want capcom to try again. Clutch claw and other systems in place could make water combat actually fun and not tedious if they try hard enough

Like how Kecha Wacha and Nerscylla mechanically depend on maps being set up in 2 layers with a layer of vines you can walk around on above solid ground, and absolutely nothing else works or they are missing half of their moveset.

The only ones this fully applies to are nerscylla and kecha wacha

Real talk though Lagi was almost completed before World even entered the final stages of development but they couldn't afford to dedicate so many resources to a single skeleton at the time. With the extra development time they've probably solved the main issue they faced being how the skeleton would break in World's environments as well as break due to changes in the animation procedure governing World's systems.
The real catch though is that Lagi means leviathans will be used. To some that means gay fox will make a comeback, because Capcom themselves said they won't put effort into a skeleton that's only single use. However, what they don't realize is that gay fox won't be back until MH6. Neither will Gammoth or budget neon chinese electric Rathalos.
All that time fixing Lagi will be spent bringing back Amatsu.

I really hope all the boys gets in. Valstrax, Lagiacrus, Seregios, Gore, Mizutsune, all of them.

Improvements to vertical movement through the insect glaive, aerial attacks, and the inclusion of slingers mean that they can make underwater comfortable to traverse and design combat for underwater encounters.
You can easily just give hunters a belt/back pod that has temporary bursts like the insect glaive jumps, but for underwater. You can have the slinger able to be fired and drag you through underwater areas both for movement and positioning.

They've already broken the mold with Banbaro and Beotodus. It seems silly to stop with just two low-tier monsters on top of the usual new flagship and endboss.

Beotodus isn't really new. It's a typical reskin the same way mudsioth was a reskin of Lavasioth the same way Lavasioth was a reskin of Plesioth. It doesn't even have its own unique animations.
Banbaro and Velkhana are the only real new monsters which is in line for a G game.

Depends on what you mean, Gen/GU Deviants and Frontier Zeniths are basically the same idea, the latter just have special over-developed parts that can be broken to weaken the monster and for use in crafting. However the latter game also has:

>Burst species (Zerureusu, Diorex, etc)
>Origin species (Toa Tesukatora, Voljang, etc)
>Musous (superbosses like Blinking Nargacuga or Howling Zinogre)
>Other stuff like Supremacy and Shiten Conquests

So there's a fair few derivative families.

The fights are a mixed bag, but yeah it's just Japan being Japan - they got this compulsion where everything running for a long time has to get even more ridiculous. Regardless I'd still think they're much better than deviants ever were, there's three different pieces of music for the four incrementally harder versions (which may get new attacks as you go up) so you don't get one shitty piece of music blurting all the time. In the case of Zeniths it probably helps that they became the next gold standard for G-Rank equipment, with deviants a lot of that gear isn't really worth making, especially the armors.

The intent behind the designs between the two are still pretty different despite being the same thing, although they kind of slept on the idea of 'Origin' monsters.

Nerg has elderseal because his weapons have it, and elderseal makes no fucking sense when poison literally does the same thing before in classic MH.

And Nerg is also signifigantly smaller while relying on sheer force alone. Size matters.

The cutscene shit is pretty awful, but removing the distinction between village and guild hall quests actually makes progression lightyears faster, especially when you hit high rank and you can do pretty much anything you want as long as you're sniffing pink rathian/nerg/kush/teo/vaal tracks along the way.

The real problem is the endless goddamn tutorials, I swear I was still getting told how dodge attacks, how mounting works, and that I can carve monsters for rewards while farming high rank odo for gems. I think playing offline might cause tutorial flags to get wonky or something.

Thing is, that those cutscenes were mostly for village stuff that didn't collide with the online mode, only intros for the actual online mode and they can be skipped if the players want to skip, but they are pretty cool tho, who skip those?

I think it might be a fun thing to try. Not really something to grind, but just a way to try to measure my skill and see how it's like to go through the game without picking and choosing my weapons and sets.

Except ore and bone weapons are incredibly easy to get. They're already the welfare weapons, and you can plan around them since there's no way you can get everything for 2+ upgrades along a tree from a single hunt.

A speedrun would probably opt for a material-efficient path over something more elaborate.

There is a shit load of keys and a shit load of stuff to grind, iron/bone won't always be the best option when you have to look for stupid shit like dragonite/carbalite on considerable amounts at some point.

PC speedruns of World are literally banned from the TA wiki because they can use mods and such to eliminate RNG that otherwise impairs console runs. Stuff like food skills, monster/player spawn points, and monster size and health modifiers. The only thing it can't pin down is monster AI itself, which can waste a lot of time if it doesn't use exploitable moves. Hell, in the earliest stages of pre-World games there's even the small chance of failing a combine before getting your books, which just might dick over a runner who likes to grab the bare minimum of what he needs to proceed.

Put all that over the course of a whole playthrough as well as basic shit like not getting the drops to upgrade your gear and there's plenty of RNG to worry about.

The pukei fighting alongside you in the witcher even makes wish for more instances of that in the game. Like you save or help a monster somehow and it helps you fight another monster or it sees you fighting its rival species and it sees an opportunity to gain an advantage over the monster you're fighting. I don't understand how there hasn't been a hunting dog companion yet. Not just that unused weapon concept, but a companion of any kind. There's plenty of small monsters with pack hunting tactics and relatively complex social structures, but none of them can be tamed more than temporarily.

In Frontier you get a Halk which is a little Flying Wyvern that you can customise like your Palico. When Wingdrakes were revealed for World I actually thought they’d be mainline’s version of Halks, but they ended up just being glorified Farcasters. I hope they let your Wingdrake be customisable and join in the fight in the next game.

ATs are far more consistent when done alone, but a lot less fun. A guy I played with back when AT Luna released got so tired of randoms dying to her supernova that he used his Extremoth healer build just to spam vitality powder and mega potions when she nova’d. I've seen Halks before, but no one ever seems to talk about them. The excuse for Mernos is probably that they're too skittish to be trained for combat, but it's not like there couldn't be more predatory bird wyvern out there.

From a design perspective, a birdlike companion would probably be easier to work with than something like a Jagras or Wulg. Way less concerns for how it can handle terrain or attack monsters from various angles. I could see some kind of falconry being worked into a new kind of ranged weapon too, like a more fleshed out version of the kinsect.

No, people say the black dragons are world ending shits because almost all of it comes from the databooks, ecology books, and illustration guides. And Capcom has been including more things from the entries in canon material - like White Fatalis being able to cause an eclipse and rip open a portal. That was written about in the 2nd Gen illustration guide for White Fatalis, and that became a cutscene in 4U. The Castle Schrade shit was also written as a civilization that the guild hides from the general public, perpetually covered in storms and despair in those same books.
Capcom has been consistent about making flavor from those addendum materials canon for the black dragons.
