An American suburban neighborhood. But I don't mean like in Earthbound where you eventually wander off to the fucking desert and swamp and shit. I mean the streets are highly detailed. And you can enter various homes, all fully detailed inside. The entire game takes place in that neighborhood. Things just become progressively weirder over time, as the horrors take over.

AN ANCIENT EVIL ASLEEP

It's your standard fantasy setting, but instead of existing in it's own universe, it's a planet in the same universe as modern day Earth, and you can travel back and forth between the two. Eventually the two worlds begin to bleed together. The villain in the fantasy world starts equipping his henchmen with modern weapons, the American military begins using magic, dragons rampage down the streets of New York, shit like that.

milton keynes

You are a 30 year old social reject that has nothing going for them, loner, loser, angry with society and the way politics are going. But you are going to put things IN YOUR OWN HANDS DAMMIT and be the change you want to see in the world.
So as a comic book nerd, you put on a mask and start the vigilante life, attacking gangsters, low life crooks, hooligans and vandals, and optionally if you want to take that road, minorities and the homeless and prostitutes, etc. You attract other losers to your cause, and you are all "superheroes" with no super powers, with football/hockey armor and baseball bats and guns.
Its like a Frank Miller thing, ugly anti-hero shit. You need to pick how much of a bad guy you really are, hire other peeps, try to keep your daytime job and expand your base and keep it all a secret. The plot will have the police working on your case, an infiltrator, and a crazy chick trying to be your weird groupie, except she is legit evil and wants to torture and murder people. The ends are you being a discount Batman, or turning into a discount Joker, classic good-bad axis.

Fight Club/Kickass or something.

That's just space station 13 though.

Natural Doctrine did this and made a plot point out of it with Pluton, doesn't really work, ends up being one of the most tedious kind of resource management, especially since in that game Pluton was a finite resource so your mages had to really avoid doing anything at all until it was time to drop the pluton nuke to turn to tables.
Doesn't help that the game was also X-Com taken to its logical extreme, which made the game neither a RPG nor a strategy game, but a trial and error puzzle with progressively less room for errors depending on the difficulty level, a single wrong move at any point of your progression in a stage and it was game over.

They aren't RPGs, they're tactical-shooter games sort of like Rainbow Six.

There's also Toy Commander (a vehicle combat game) and a couple of Gundam games about playing with Gundam toys.

But I've never seen it done with an RPG, despite there being a bunch of actual real-life RPGs played with miniatures on little model sets in people's basements.

This but make them shotas and make them Okinawan brown.

>nice art > nice combat system > interesting npcs
who gives a fuck about anything else

well you never specified that the game itself is supposed to be an RPG, I imagined an adventure game with sentient D&D miniatures

It will always be set in Japan. Sorry bud, enjoy your shitty weaboo waifushit sim nonsense with horrendous writing,

Probably Diablo 4 if it ever gets made; they kind of hinted at the "angels" getting real fed up with humans in Reaper of souls.

>well you never specified that the game itself is supposed to be an RPG
Re-read the OP
>You have 10 seconds to name an original setting for an RPG

but my point still stands, I've never seen it done for anything in the "sentient D&D" realm; adventure, action, RPG, etc. The closest have been military-type games about playing with military toys, never anything fantasy or adventure-themed.

Also, most of the games that have done this have kind of hand-waved the setting into the background to be more environmental; you are playing as little plastic characters, and some of the levels are like a way-scaled-up version of a kitchen counter with cans on it, or whatever. But you don't really have the meta-narrative of the actual humans playing the game going on behind it, and I think that's what makes the setting interesting. At least, it was what made it interesting for the Fable 3 quest; it's funny because the world changes and responds to these omniscient-view narrator characters interacting off-screen and talking about what you're doing.

Do you play as a boy or a girl?

What the fuck is Jägger-san doing here

how is generic anime art good?

Super-early humanity, directly post-Eden. Sort of like the awakening of the elves in the Silmarillion; they are dumped in a world with zero development on any level.
Character skill upgrading is developing the very concepts of those things; like discovering simple machines like the lever and wedge increases blunt and sharp damage as you understand WHY those things work and tailor your tools to maximize their use.
Non-combat upgrades would be things like what organs of an animal make the best food, how thermal insulation works, how to make fire, etc.
Build civiliation up on an individual character-based level with people who will live for hundred of years in the prime of their lives. Convincing someone that using some in-between medium is more efficient (instead of direct bartering) is the birth of currency, etc.
End-game consists of preparing for a randomized gauntlet of major disasters (barbarians, drought, famine, disease, animal attacks) to test whether the combination of character you made, civilization you built, and people you work with are going to live on to start civilization as a whole. Bad decisions in one area can be compensated for with good decisions in other areas and skillful play.

>Many years ago billions of gods both great and minor ruled the world, all of whom had one unique attribute of existence that they alone governed. A great war of uncertain origin happens and the gods are almost universally wiped out.
>The 8 that are left decide to create the sentient beings that now rule the world, each ruling the four races in pairs. The new races also have the unintentional quirk of being individually born with a completely random dead god’s soul intertwined with theirs which gives them the same attributes or abilities.
>This normally manifests in good things such as say, someone bound to the god of music being naturally talented as a musician or the goddess of trees making someone a naturally skilled gardener or an avid conservationalist.
>It can also result in misfortunes or amusing historical footnotes like, say, being bound to the god of uncontrollable flatulence with predictable results or that the undying rage of one of the world’s most powerful generals and mightiest conquerors possibly maybe probably being driven by the fact he was bound to the god of sexual impotence.

Inside the human body, or something that relates to the human body in some way. Think about it, you could do so much shit with it. Some of these are more of a "premise" than a "setting," but here goes:

>1) Osmosis Jones as an RPG, you play as a white blood cell or an antibody exploring the human body while fighting viruses.

>2) You play as the brain, controlling a person living their life and you fight bad thoughts and emotions you come across.

>3) Inside Out as an RPG, you encounter IRL enemies except each emotion is a separate party member with skills that make sense for each emotion. Anger would have berserker skills, Joy would have buffs, Fear would have Flee, etc.

>4) Similar to the last one, except you're a bunch of ghosts that have possessed a person. The separate party members are the limbs you've possessed, with skills depending on what you're wearing. A comical tone would fit very nicely, as you go around trying to function as normally as you can while trying to keep a low profile. Also, would work in pretty much any setting.

>5) You're the brain again, except you're a metaphorical representation of the brain exploring a metaphorical representation of the person's psyche or some cringy pretentious shit like that.

Hundreds of years later most of the survivors are nomads travelling benest stream of sun shards prbiting the Earth, following the warmth to avoid dying in the frozen wastes. The only cities are built beneath a small number of stationary shards.

Alchemists use shard dust to perform magic such as creating fresh water from air, and with larger pieces can perform more incredible feats. Monsters mutated on the sunfacing part of the world by the cosmic power of the hatching roam the darklands between the few bastions of light.

Food is scarce, guilds of alchemists/merchants and noble houses rule the only societies with absolute power, and the lands of night are dark and full of terror. Great riches of the old world lie within them for adventurers willing to brave the damned paths to ancient settlements.

Setting is late middle ages Mediterranean inspired with heavy Arab influences (as in old, pre-1800 Arab) in more nomadic places.

Que te meto una puta hostia

There was that one Yea Forums mansion RPGmaker game.

A supernatural Western game that largely takes place in a cave mine. The over world becomes inhabitable because sunlight mysteriously behind to harm and even kill majority of people, excluding most children.
Most of the game you're in this underground wild west society where everyone had to flee their homes and is now going crazy in the cramped dark.
Think of the Metro series but instead of ruskies in the metro train tunnels it's mid 18th century rednecks in creepy dark mines. People would go crazy Bioshock style and eventually you have to escape the cave and brave the scorching surface world. Trips at night would include all kinds of big nasties.
the whole point is that judgement day suddenly happens, and the sun scorches the skin of any and all sinners. Thus most children are exempt from this curse while most adults nearly self immolate. There would be straight up demon enemies for the end game and you'd discover angelic weapons and armor as loot. The final boss would be god, just like my jrpg's.
Whatcha think, v?

the setting of characters in the real world playing a game
theres only one i can think of, and its shit, maybe costume quest might barely count

Who is dis cutie!

I've always liked the idea of a game taking place in a single house where you play as tiny dust bunnies with different classes

A boy's imagination

A post third impact world where you ride a raft through a sea of tang.

your moms vagina

Karolina, dunno last name
the filename before the _ is her IG

Fantasy World but it's an island that exists in the real world.

It's like a 7th/8th continent that suddenly rose from the ocean decades ago.
So you get like elves and guns, nukes and magic, dragons and planes, dick-ass rogues making pop-culture references, cute elves with MAGA hats, magic gold entering the global economy, etc..

autism

Well, exploring them irl is kinda neat. Kinda. That's why the main focus would be on the underground society they build and they supernatural resistance they find within the cave.
But if the mine-town/cave system WAS interesting... does it sound like something you'd play, user?

I just mean visually I'd worry about it being too bland. The concept is nice, but it really just sounds like

You are the captain of a pirate ship and your goal is to travel around the world to collect the biggest riches. In your way you willl be attacked by the navy, other pirates and natural disasters. You can use stars, maps and compasses for navigation.

you mean ark?

>lunk miniboss has the lunk alarm debuff that can cause your team to wipe

Bamham

>The difference in setting is potayto/potahto.
There's a 2000 years time gap between them you dumb fuck

Yeah because that totally always means something
>this game isn't set in 1,000,000 BC like the last one, it's in 998,000 BC

It's only great because it's true and your delicate idea of what you thought an RPG was is wrong. Also, the settings are clearly similar enough to generate a similar aesthetic and you're just splitting hairs because you want to tell yourself you're right.

The fact is that it's not different enough to be considered original, and Origins has the proper amount of progression, loot, and role play opportunities to objectively be considered an RPG and you don't want to admit that because of East vs West garbage or it's AAA, or whatever stupid arbitrary line you want to invent to make you think you're right.

A hitman, where the hub is a hitman bar like in deadpool

shrunk inside a human body where you can mingle with all the cells in the body in anime forms.
Plot twist: you are a virus in disguise and don't know it
Plot twist 2: you are inside your mother!

So basically like every other RPG but with a different skin and no actual setting changes to make it unique? Cool. You're retarded.

>American Civil War JRPG
Literally a part of Live a Live

Groß Südafrikanismus

New York.

Are you pretending to be retarded or are you an actual dum dum? There was already a huge difference between the Egypt of Origins and the Egypt on the eve of Alexander's conquests.

Ok, nerd.
How would you portray a Galaxy in a rpg?
Galaxy isn't just a shiniest part of it.

Vaporwave world

You awaken as the legendary hero destined by fate to defeat an ancient evil and save the world. Trouble is while you were sleeping the cult of your god found out where the evil was sleeping, broke into this tomb, killed the bastard after a year of effort, with its then leader claiming to be you with all the divine right that entails.
Now that you've woken up the god stoped takeing calls, there's a skism in this faith thats just in the uncanny Valley between your beliefs and forgin gods, people are questioning if the evil was actually killed in the first place and some are proclaiming you a new evil awoken.

>The Siberian frontier of Imperial Russia during the 1890's, near the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway during the reign of Alexander III.
>Colonial Australia during the time of bushranger activity.
>Southern African in the interim between the Mfecane and the British subjugation of the Boer republics and native areas.
>Northern China during the Ming era.

Just actually looking back into history gives you so many options that for some reason nobody decides to look at as basis for media.

A kitchen. Final fight happens on the super freezing™ compartment against the big bad evil mouse

How about the Russian Civil War?

The best opportunities for emergent storytelling come in systems where overarching authority is low and sub-region diversity is high, which generally applies to regions undergoing relative anarchy. In terms of modern settings there are few that match the RCW in either aspect.

I like this concept. Maybe there isn´t an internet or at least it´s only used for military purposes or it´s way too expensive for the average joe. Maybe we never invented cinematography and therefore video making radio the most important medium for information and entertainment.

I didn't know how much I wanted this until now

Valkyria Chronicles

An ancient “evil” sleeps and dreams about being a hero saving the world but you don’t know it a dream until the hero wakes you up to kill you. The lead up to the hero being the final boss and that everything leading up to that point is a dream won’t be obvious but would be heavily implied.
