I'm buying this game because I like this series. I was never drawn in by fanservice, because there isn't any anyway. I'm sorry you're unhappy with games like this having success, but if it really does bother you, feel comforted by the fact that these sorts of games don't cost much money to make, and don't make much money in return. They are truly niche games, and in a way it's sad that so many great games will go unappreciated by the majority of gamers, but it's also kind of nice that some of us get to feel we've discovered a hidden gem or an underappreciated series.
Regardless, I don't play games to take myself seriously, or to take games seriously. I'm sure some people do, but people like me prefer to play games as a way to escape some of life's hardships, while also affirming life's small miracles, and greater beauties.
Although ultimately, I do think it's a shame that a simply dressed, innocent young girl is being seen as too erotic to treat as a normal person.

I bought one Atelier game on PS3 and thought it was cheaply made kusoge trash but this one has at least a little higher production value and a better looking girl so I'm considering playing it, but only AFTER I get to see some gameplay footage.

They already showed gameplay though. And it does look better than their last game. It's not a massive upgrade that will make it look like a triple A game but the difference is there.
Nobody plays Atelier for the graphics anyway, so it's just a little something extra. Also the music is still absolute top notch.

If you've played any more than one of Atelier games you would see how much they recycle animations, NPCs and items. Gust also sells tons of physical stuff to their most dedicated fans through their webstore. But I still do love to play them.

It isn't. 10k is where CH breaks even, Gust is MAYBE 15, MAYBE the same as CH. Atlus is anywhere from 50k - 100k. Falcom are between 15 and 50k. The budgets are low so the games don't sell poorly at all, they sell as well as they need to.

As for why, the Japs just make whatever they want, not for a committee. You see evidence of this all the time with things like Toridamono getting full freedom to make Ryza as he pleased, CH continuously making weird experimental games with no real grounding the idea will work, hell even Falcom and it's ultra long interconnected super RPG series Kiseki isn't something a committee would never agree to since you need to play 9+ other games before the newest entry to understand everything going on.
The Japs have a surprising amount of freedom if they don't put a fuck huge budget into the game.

I honestly like that western indies are raising up as well, they probably have a similar budget as these smaller Jap studios have. And sometimes they result in a fun videogame that does what a small group of developers want. Too big budgets usually result in something that is too safe and tries to appeal to everyone.

On another note, how long are Atelier games, usually? Do they get nuts at all? I tried out the alchemist one, I think, when I had Psnow, and while spamming normal attack I couldn't really see where the mechanics were going.
They're about 40-60 hours main story and 80-100 hours for 100%
A lot of the mechanics relate to item creation through alchemy so the battle system remains rather simple if you aren't focussing on alchemy and ways to manipulate turns through use of the items you've crafted. If you treat Atelier like a normal JRPG you won't get much out of it apart from cute girl SoL scenes.

Eveything is about budget and expectatives. Codename Steam was a failure with 30K because they wanted to create a tentpole franchise, but it was OK for japanese market. None of Atelier games was aiming to sell 1mill, at 200K they are over any expectative. You vision is closer to AAA games, but this is Guts, not Ubi or Activision, they are still a small company, they dont want to grow up to a mega-conglomerate.

40k in japan is about what guilty gear sells and that series has lasted two decades at this point. Anything that sells over 100k is pretty good for a normal game, AAA sales numbers have polluted your mind.
