What I mean is why aren't there for example any games on the yugoslav wars, an RTS about the ottoman incursions into the balkans, GTA yugoslavia etc.

The setting is perfect though. Even in popular games that encompass these nations they are almost never mentioned. WW2 games never have the collaborationists from these countries, or the yugoslav partisans and Tito who were Europe's most effective anti-Axis resistance movement during World War II, you just never hear about this shit in games and it feels like there's a huge unused potential in this region.

The Bosnian war started when an innocent Serb was killed at a wedding in Sarajevo my a known criminal and then made a commander during the war and the Croats expelled 200 thousand Serbs from their homes in Croatia during Operation Storm. Serbs also wanted nothing to do with Izetbegovic and his Islamist goals. When it became apparent that Yugoslavia would fall apart every side started fighting to keep their ethnic pockets in their own borders, search up what Croatia did in Herzegovina and Mostar. Crimes were committed on all sides and the ambitions of each side were the same, secure more territory for their country.

The constitution of Yugoslavia stated that if one of the included ethnicities wanted to separate and create their own state, that they were allowed to do so. A problem then arises when there's a mix of Serbs/Croats/Slovenes/Muslims living across the entirety of the Yugoslavian territory, so what the Croats wanted to claim as their territory contained a lot of Serbs and Muslims who disagreed and didn't want to move because of it, and vice versa. So naturally, everyone went to war for muh clay.

That's why it escalated into an armed conflict anyways. As for the tensions that lead up to this point, the country was plunged into an economic crisis when when Tito died (the Great Leader figure of Yugoslavia), it was written that every four years Yugoslavia would be presided by a president from one of the six territories in a fixed order. First you'd get someone from Croatia, then from Serbia, then from Bosnia, and so on. Somewhat predictably, this system failed with the second cycle when the Serbian-appointed president then trying to turn it into a Greater Serbia because of Serbs being a greater ethnic majority in Yugoslavia at the time, which prompted the remaining ethnicities to disagree and secede.

But as I mentioned before, Serbs in the new Croatia rebelled and created Serb-autonomous areas like Krajina, and what resulted was massive 'population displacement'.
Inflamed by politicians trying to secure power through nationalist rhetoric, Croats and Serbs proceeded to indulge in their old perilous and horrible rivalry at the cost of many lives. Interim you had Muslim minorities in Bosnia trying to secure their own clay and fighting both Croats/Serbs for independence, and then you had the military complex in the West gracefully donating new weapons to the conflict for 'live' testing'.

Despite Serbs being able to fill the role of classic villains there weren't enough heroic players or stories to offset the general horror

Yugoslavia was a bunch of mostly unrelated tiny countries that only stuck together with the personal charisma of Tito. Tito was, out of all Soviet bloc dictators, the "Good one" - the real "man of the people" who pretty much everybody loved, and while he was alive, Yugoslavia could pretend to have something in common. As soon as he died in 1980, the cracks began showing, and when Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Yugoslavia broke apart soon after. It was an artificial state to begin with, and artificial states cannot last.

Every artificial state will fall apart precisely because of that. America will fall apart for that reason too. Only states that have the potential to be permanent are natural ones, ones completely dominated by one tribe with common ancestry, common culture, common ideas of how things should be.
